Yep, nearly cut the corner off my left thumb a few years back. Now I make sure there are no fingers hanging over the edge of the ruler when I ZOOM up it!

The guard activates when the pressure on the cutter is reduced, and you can even set the depth of cutter blade. It has three settings - light fabrics, lock and heavy fabrics.

Happy Scissoring,

Would you tell me the name of the cutter you are talking about? Thanks

So very sorry to hear about your accident!  I have not -- yet -- cut my finger with a rotary cutter, and I certainly hope I never do!!!

Now the question I MUST ask is: did you bleed on the fabric??!!    I used to tease my students whenever they would cry, "Ouch! I just stuck my finger with the needle!!" My first response was, "Just DON'T bleed on the fabric!!!!" They always laughed, and they were less likely to dwell on their pin prick. It didn't take them too long to start saying the same thing to each other!!!

I just this morning got my fingernail down into the quick. At least that's all it was.

Deborahlees 05-19-2011 01:50 PM

when I was using my madoline in the kitchen to slice onions, I sliced the entire tip on my little finger, stood there in total disbelief....looked and found the piece, what was I thinking....glue it back on !!!! dumb, dumb, dumb........oh well I guess I didn't need it....

Scissorman 05-19-2011 02:13 PM

KAI Rotary Cutters are the brand name. The most popular size is the model RS- 45 which is a 45mm and it's also available in the RS - 60 which is a 60mm. Yes, I did a lot of research before choosing to sell this brand of cutter only in my online store. They are the safest cutter that I have come across, and they're made in Japan! There are a number of dangerous cutters are the marketplace today.

I took a huge chunk from the end of my left index finger with a rotary cutter on Thanksgiving day 12 years ago. The drs. sewed it back. Looks a little funny, but there is sensation and it works.

Judy Smith 05-19-2011 02:53 PM

I've never cut myself because I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW
TO USE IT. I press with all my might and still half of the fabric isn't cut. About to give up.

writerwomen 05-19-2011 02:57 PM

yes, have even cut off a few nails - I prefer scissors

Please be careful about using it near your bathtub. According to The Gypsy Quilter, it isn't reliable enough to place all of your faith into using it for that purpose.

How many layers are you trying to cut through? If the cutter is open fully, you shouldn't have any problems cutting through the fabric. You definitely shouldn't have to press with all your might, which could be very dangerous if it slipped. Please visit your local quilt shop and have them help you learn to use it properly.

The other day a gal who'd never used a rotory cutter was helping me. I showed her how to use it and my last words were---------"be careful so that you don't cut yourself."

Her first words were "Do we have band-aids handy?"

I'm more likely to skin my knuckles on my mandolin. That spikey food holder just doesn't work as well as a hand.

Not yet, should I be looking for a chain mail glove for protection?

mltquilt

What is a Klutz glove? Is is just for those of us that are klutzs and cut ourselves???

Stitchit123 05-19-2011 06:23 PM

Yes the 1st time it was a nick the 2nd wasn't I had my thumb on the ruler -fingers on the fabric Yep cut the web couldn't be stitched they taped my thumb to my index finger with yards of tape and tell me DON"T get it wet or use the afflicted area I am right handed I didn't miss washing dishes --Bathing myself was a challenge I think all my furniture has dents from vaccuuming left handed Since then I've been extra careful now its only my nails so I figure they must have needed clipped anyways

jollyquilting 05-19-2011 06:23 PM

The only time I got knicked was trying to take one out of those blister card trying to get it open. So far, I have remembered to be careful since I take coumadin. LOL

3NorwichTerr 05-19-2011 06:40 PM

I have used more bandaids since I started using a rotary cutter than I have in my entire adult life up to then. Fortunately never a serious cut, but plenty of bleeding and swearing.

I cut my finger 3/8 to 1/2 of an inch circle off the end of my left ring finger. It was a circle of skin lost . It was VERY painful and bloody. It occurred at a class at our Quilt Group. I got distracted and poof it was done. I got help from a member of the group and got packed up and got to my car. I drove myself to the hospital with pressure on my finger holding it in a tight grip. I got to the hospital and had an injection to my hand to numb the pain. I did not feel very good. I was off work for 2 weeks and had to go to my Dr every 3 days to make sure it was healing well.
I tried the finger guards and they come off, so I changed my practice.... my fingers are 1.5 to 2 inches from the edge, I do not let myself get distracted and I use a handle on my ruler as much as possible. Be Careful. Oh and I am a Nurse! Live and learn.

Hello
I can relate I not only cut my finger once but did it twice. The one time I had to go to the dr. He told me I better start buying my clothes. heheheh
heheheheh

QultingaddictUK 05-20-2011 12:57 AM

Yep, when I first started now I only use safety cutters and nag and nag my pupils about the safe use of them, sorry about your ouch.

CruisingStef 05-20-2011 01:09 AM

Yup! Cut my thumb right down the middle. OUCH!!!!! Had to have stitches. Shortly afterwards, bought the klutz glove.
Now, I am SO careful in my cutting, and I am sure to always close my cutter now.

Yes several times. Now I keep my rotary cutter a long way away with the blade CLOSED.

3plus2granny 05-20-2011 05:16 AM

I did mine a couple months ago. The nerve endings in your fingers are very painful. Put lots of neosporin on it so the bandage doesn't stick to the cut. My sore kept bleeding because the blood would dry and then get peeled off. It took longer to heal.

I feel your pain.

quilt crazee 05-20-2011 06:07 AM

ohh, trying taking up wood carving! That's a whole another set of knives! The difference there's a whole room full of people helping get the bleeding under control or to make you feel stupid1 lol!!

Are you kidding? I'd like to meet someone who uses a rotary cutter and HASN'T cut her finger! Don't feel dumb, just use one of the handy tools, gloves, etc., that will prevent the next one. I even cut my finger bad once by reaching into the pocket of my carrier and had not locked the rotary cutter when I put it in the pocket! My teen-age grandson wnted to "help" me cut one time, and all the warnings were ignored! Bet he will listen next time!

I did not bleed on the fabric but used the fabric for a pressure dressing.... you do what you have to do. Such a sacrifice!
I have not cut my finger since... I am being careful.

GrannyFitz4 05-21-2011 07:01 AM

I am careful with my rotary cutter, but one of the worst things I ever did was burn my finger on the mini iron. I grabbed the iron. OMG did that hurt. I haven't used the iron since.

MarySews 05-21-2011 12:56 PM

I always keep a couple of bandaids in my rotary cutter case.

zaza 05-22-2011 07:02 PM

yes, yes, and yes. though minor. even though i try to be carefull "OOPS" and I am cut. hope you're OK.

Ritas Relics 05-23-2011 09:53 AM

I bought some shower handle holders with suction cups glad I did saves my blood too.

nancyz 05-24-2011 07:08 AM

I did this last fall, and nearly severed a large chunk of my pinky. The next day, it was still bleeding, so I went to the doc. It should have had stitches, but it had been more than 18 hours, so they couldn't stitch due to possible infection. They butterflied it, and it hurt a good couple of weeks. I have a scar there now. OUCH!

I never have shoes on when in sewing room. Can't seem to sew with them on. I hope I don't drop the cutter, never really thought about that. Always think about stepping on pins though. I too have cut my fingers a few times. It hurts.

pegquilter8 05-24-2011 03:35 PM

Wow, did I!! I was demonstrating to a newstudent the proper method of hqandling a cutter. When I laid it down, the blade was still a tiny bit exposed and you guessed it---
OUCH. "Well that's why we always close the blade" SHE is very careful.
