I have good luck placing my hand on the mat AND the ruler....

Invisigrip! It is clear plastic that clings once it's applied to the back of the ruler. I don't know WHY it works, but it does.

I Use june tailor shape cut ruler, and i put the clear dots on it

I have sandpaper and felt dots. I've also used hot glue gun dots. All are an improvement over nothing. You can even try roughing up the edges on back side of your ruler with some 60 grit sand paper.

I use both...handle and sand paper dots on all my rulers
