so, tell me, do real quilters do all these things?

omg !!! Your me!!!

DebbE 06-24-2012 06:49 AM

Oh yes, 'real' quilters do all that and more. I haven't made a quilt for our bed yet, I'm so busy doing quilts for others. I have made a promise to myself that OUR quilt will get made this year!

sweetlummi 06-24-2012 07:16 AM

caspharm 06-24-2012 08:54 AM

Absolutely!

captlynhall 06-24-2012 09:12 AM

You are for sure a quilter, and isn't it grand? My friend and I have lunch every Monday, and I am always steering her to one quilt shop or another. We also hit Joann's, Hobby Lobby, Hancock's and any place else that has fabric, notions or anything quilt related. I never thought about Barnes and Noble, but think we may just have to check that out tomorrow. Thanks for the information.

rosiewell 06-24-2012 09:31 AM

Yes and they buy fabric they don't need because you never know when you may need it and every now and then they go thru their stash of fabric and talk to it!

JanieH 06-24-2012 10:12 AM

Congratulations! Welcome to our addiction!

mommatomboy 06-24-2012 10:20 AM

Yes, real quilters do this.I am an amature, but I have 3 tops finished and am working on another. I plan to quilt them with my regular sewing machine all at the same time. So smile and keep doing what you love to do.

Bobbielinks 06-24-2012 11:00 AM

Yep, you're hooked, real quilter!

rrhaigh 06-24-2012 11:09 AM

I am in the same boat with you! I sewed garments for 30 years and then took up quilting and I am definately hooked. Actually I am even more obsessed with quilting than I was with making clothing. My quilting stash far outgrew my garment fabric stash - had to purge the garment stash to make room for all the cotton! Such beautiful fabrics and so many patterns just waiting for us!

carolynjo 06-24-2012 11:55 AM

Good show you recognized the symptoms early. Now, relax and enjoy!

Dolphyngyrl 06-24-2012 12:17 PM

Yes, it's a requirement to be obsessed LOL!!!

gin 06-24-2012 01:13 PM

welcome to our world - it's a very special place to be

Judie 06-24-2012 02:19 PM

Elaray, you better sit down and really give this some thought... I, too, sew garments.. For most of my life I made whatever we needed from wedding dresses to play clothes. I drafted patterns, and did home dec. I would have told you that I would never buy off the rack clothes.. Then that quilting bug bit me.. bad. It was quite a few years ago now and all I do is quilt. I love it. I often have more than one quilt going at a time.. I knew I have gone over the edge when I was given a lovely piece of fabric that would make a very nice blouse, and after getting out a pattern I didn't want to be bothered matching the fronts.. So I put it away "for another time." I just want to do what is relaxing and rewarding as well, I really just want to quilt.

So now, what are we going to do with all this sewing stuff??

maryellen2u 06-24-2012 02:37 PM

Ooops! You've been bitten by the quilting bug. It is not a terrible thing. It will be expensive but you will have such fun and meet some great people. Enjoy!

Elaray 06-24-2012 03:58 PM

I feel better knowing I'm in such good company. :)

And … I forgot to mention, I bought "Jelly Roll Quilts" by Pam and Nicky Lintott and read it cover to cover just like a novel.

Lavada 06-24-2012 04:47 PM

Sounds like you have truely joined the group. Welcome.

IrelandDragonQuilting 06-24-2012 07:37 PM

Absolutely!

danece 06-24-2012 08:48 PM

Being a "real quilter" to me means getting lost in the quilters section of any type of mshop, and always purchasing an extra 1/2 to 1 yard of fabric to let my stash evolve into a thing of it's own

SandScraps 06-25-2012 02:39 AM

No doubt about it: you are a quilter. However, it's a healthy addiction (?????)

Mary O 06-25-2012 03:15 AM

LOL you poor thing..................

BeverlyH 06-25-2012 03:31 AM

It's just as good as eating chocolate! Soothing!

Julie in NM 06-25-2012 03:40 AM

I think you are OUR twin....separated at birth...lol. Son started new job. I said...anyone one need a quilt?

earlori7 06-25-2012 04:30 AM

I too have sewn for years, but just began quilting a few years ago. I donated all my sewing fabric not appropriate for quilting and have accumulated quite a stash. And....besides quilting, quilting I spend sooo much time reading about what all you other quilters are doing and saying. It keeps me excited about quilting and sometimes a little too jazzed up.

dahlshouse 06-25-2012 05:06 AM

I'm not alone I see... I have ideas for the different family members and start collecting for each of their quilts... grandchildren now will be for their weddings.. others are just because something had sparked an idea for that particular person... I am always searching for ideas or material that will set me off with another quilt..

WOW I could have written this. I did make my first quilt about 25 yrs ago but made it through the shop that I bought and took all my sewing classes. It was the log cabin block and I made 5, all except one, were for king size beds. I am still using that first quilt on my bed. After doing those I put it up until 4 yrs ago when family life changed and I needed something to take up space in my mind and time. I consider myself a quilter and so are you!!

mom-6 06-25-2012 07:57 AM

If you're like me, you also discovered that the sewing skills you already had are most helpful, but the degree of precision required in some aspects of quilting is greater than in things like kids costumes, for instance. I had gotten really lazy over the years and now am having to pay much closer attention to stitching perfectly (Ha!) straight seams.
On the other hand, I'm not intimidated by bias seams, which I hear all the time about how difficult or scary they are (why?).
Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting!

craftymatt2 06-25-2012 01:19 PM

Yep, welcome to our addiction, the only thing i can mention is, have fun it could be worse

cowgirlquilter 06-25-2012 01:23 PM

Yeeeehhhaaaw! You are in the club!!!!

MacThayer 06-25-2012 04:53 PM

It's just such a nice addiction to have. You're doing something creative, productive, useful, beautiful and all kinds of other lovely adjectives. Just think, you could have become addicted to gambling, or other such nonsense. This is something wonderful that will add creativity, growth and meaning to any potentially empty spaces in your life, and you will leave behind you beautiful quilts and similar things that people will love and enjoy. Just think of the good you can do! But remember, you have to tear yourself away from giving long enough to make yourself a quilt. Not that I've done that myself yet, but I am "intending to do it" very soon. Possibly this year. If I don't end up giving it away. The last time I made myself a quilt, my sister saw it, fell in love with it, and, well, the rest is history. But I will make myself a quilt and keep it. As soon as I get the rest done. . .

Quilting is a wonderful club full of wonderful people. You'll love it here!

nstitches4u 06-25-2012 05:28 PM

Yep! You are definitely a quilter!

nightquilter 06-25-2012 06:29 PM

You are hooked!!! all that is left for us to do is reel you in.

Glenda Kay 06-26-2012 05:57 AM

Yes! Welcome to the addicting world of quilting. I have tendonitis/tendonosis in both wrists & hands from quilting to much. I still can't quit. Wear my braces at night...quilt as much as I can in the day. So many quilts, so little time! I really am sure I live long enough to make all the quilts I have planned. LOL On the days my hands are really bad I have to take a break. It is terrible! I pace, fidget, complain, etc. Yep! It is an addiction. Oh, and I can't go to a store that has fabric without heading straight for that dept. before I do anything else. I am wondering who to will my stash to. LOL
