As a general rule, I check prices and buy from the cheapest place. However, if a friend has something I want, I might pay a little more to help them out. Different circumstances dictate different actions.

I have sold fabric on here before and I always sell it at a cost that is very reasonable.I have even been told that I am selling it for too little, but It just makes me feel good to help someone else.I have seen some really expensive prices on here also, that is why it pays to shop around.
|
Yes, I check prices with Amazon, Half.com and ebay before making a decision to purchase.
|
Anne, I will be visiting your fair country around Christmas. Our daughter lives in Bavaria. Really looking forward to seeing the beautiful countryside.

I don't believe Sadiemae meant any disrespect toward anyone. I believe she was just stating a "thought" that I am sure we all might have had at one time or another, including myself. That is why this is the perfect community for kudos, tuts, help, lessons, support, friendship, paying it forward; I could go on but we all know the benefits here. So I thank each of you for each of the aforementioned benefits. Now let us enjoy our coffee and conversations.

I never buy anything from here. Anything I have wanted was sold before I ever see the post. And I do find the book to be priced to high, so I never even consider buying them.
|
It would be hard to compete with Amazon and since they have so many places to pull from, it would be next to impossible. I believe when people post books etc, they are only trying to clear out what they don't use anymore and really don't think twice about comparing to Amazon.
|
I'm glad this has come up. Recently I saw some books for sale and I googled looking for a review (never buy a book unseen without a review!) First site that came up on my google search, there they were for half what was being asked here. I assumed the vendor just had no idea what they were worth- people often assume their second hand stuff is more valuable than it really us, but I was not going to take a chance on PMing the poster and saying this, as people are not necessarily going to appreciate that.
If some inexpereinced vendors are reading, they might learn something and hopefully increase their sales by pitching their price right. And, on a tangent, have we ever had quilting book reviews on here? |
I have been happy with the purchases I have made here - I also do Amazon as well - I haven't had the feeling that anyone has taken advantage - Shipping is bazaar and an unfortunate fact of life - I like that I can find things here that I can't find somewhere else sometimes
|
I check prices even at various stores, If it is cheaper including postage then I buy if not I dont.
|
As usual, the near to the bottom line is:
Let the buyer be AWARE! |
I check Amazon for everything I buy, partly because of the price, but also for customer reviews.
Sometimes when I note that an item on here is priced higher than I think it should be I assume the person is just trying to get back what they paid for it, probably without that Amazon discount. As for patterns, I check the price online and figure in the shipping. If it is more than cost of getting the pattern new I track it down locally. |

When I sell, I try to set reasonable prices that I would be willing to pay. I don't think anyone here is trying to take advantage, it's just that we all have different perspectives on value. |

OK, here are my two cents about this. The seller has the right to ask any price they wish for what they are offering for sale, as long as they are providing accurate and complete description of the items they are offering. By the same token, the buyer has the right to evaluate the items and decide whether it is something they need/want and whether it is a good deal for them. As far as I can see, no one is obligated to buy anything, we all make the CHOICE to buy or pass. I believe it is my responsibility to research the item I am buying and not the seller's. This is just my opinion, I look at the ads and decide whether it is for me or not, and no matter what the asking price is, I never feel that the seller is taking advantage of me. But this is just me. :) |
Good for you Anne. I agree. I got took!
|
Oh, Marvlin, you have got to check out the classifieds here. So much fun!
|
I have sold alot of my quilting books here for $7.00-10.00. I have shipped them all over the US for $2.50 or less. Maybe a little more for extra thick ones. They have all sold except 2 rather specialized ones. So, I guess my prices are in line. I don't research what they are going for elsewhere. I hope its a help to some of my fellow quilters and it thins out my collection. I have more to put up as they make great gifts from one quilter to another. If they don't sell, either its not needed or the price is wrong.
|
I purchase books, after reviewing them from the library, used from third party sellers on Amazon. I have a Prime account so the shipping is usually free or very reasonable. I have purchased books here and have been very pleased and will continue to do so in the future. The fabric I've purchased here has been awesome and it has been material that I've not seen anywhere else. It was through this board that I found favorite fabrics and charmpacks, both of which have made me very happy. All in all, while I am a big fan of Amazon, the purchases I've made from folks on this board have been fantastic. Also as someone said, the money is going to fellow quilters and so far the folks I've dealt with have been outstanding.

IMHO and that is just, what I found out, especially books seem to be quite expensive, to say the least. Before buying them over here, I check Amazon, and most of the times, the books there are way (!!) cheaper, like half of the price here or even less. Just a thought, b/c I dislike the idea of somebody taking advantage of your good hearts and trust. Like PatriceJ says: "You are all free to choose for yourselves. I, for one, do not intend to buy anything from anyone who seems to be trying to take advantage of us or this section." Quilting hugs from Germany, Anne Thanks for the topic. I've notice this too. |
Another source for books is Connecting Threads. Between CT and Amazon,I have a nice library. I also found that some Quilt Guilds have a "sale" shop when they have their annual Quilt Guild Shows.

Gee, been a member since March, first time I realized thre was a classified section. Thanks:)

Ladies, Always good to check, I purchased a quilt calculator for $19. at joann's on line, the webinar I just sat in on had it for $39.99. Used copies are less than new ones. However, generally if you purchase a book from someone here you also have someone to ask about the quilts they made out of the book. So, I always am glad to help someone out here when I can and the advice is always wonderful that comes with it. So think about it, check it out and then make your purchase. Amazon doesn't give advise on how to make quilts, only buy the books to make them. God bless everyone here for their advise, I am honored to be a member. DianneRAb

yep ! i am a price checker i have found some books and material cheaper else where
|
As with any purchase - I always check prices and determine for myself what I am willing to pay. If something is worth $20 to me. I buy and will always be disappointed if I find it cheaper somewhere else but it is worth $x to me regardless of if I can get it cheaper or got a super deal. Every site and seller and buyer has the same advantage or not - I just don't buy from those whom I think are greedy.
|
I would not try to sell something because of price differences here. A book that cost $45 here, was listed as $13 in the "States", and the same goes for software and tools. May as well double the price ( and then some) and you get the idea of our situation. I would expect second hand to be cheaper, but other than that it is always the case of 'buyer beware', regardless of where you shop.

Carol, that little cat of yours is sooooooo cute!!!!

If you feel you were taken, did you contact the seller? I always try to keep the line of communication open with everyone I deal with. Just asking because I have sold some items here and don't want to ever think I have taken anyone. I would rather give something away than think I took anyone. Just my opinion.

Haven't bought from this forum, but did stop in a LQS in Heidelberg. WOW! It's certainly a reason to shop on line if the shipping doesn't eat you up. Compared to the prices in the US, Germany was out-of sight, and had mostly fabrics that come from over on this side of the big pond. However, the shop owner of Naehzentrum Heidelberg was wonderful, spoke fluent English, and carried a fairly reasonable line. The shop displays were breath taking. Many of the patchwork things are on her website. www.naehzentrum-hd.de If I lived in the area, for immediate gratification, I'd go back to her shop.

I have not checked before buying here, but I will only buy what I feel is a reasonable price. I know that whom ever is selling on here must have bought the item, and they are trying to recoup some of their money. I have noticed people selling for as much as an item costs new, and I just skip over those. if the price doesn't seem right, then don't buy. But remember, when you buy on here, you are supporting another quilter, and I do like that
|
if i'm considering a purchase from another member here, i don't think of the fabric as "used". make my choice based strictly on whether or not it's priced within the range i'd pay for brand new from a commercial vendor.
if the fabric has already been washed, i consider that "value added". as long as the item isn't priced above current retail value, i figure it's fair. |
When I sell on this forum it is difficult - I sell the material way below price because shipping is so high!
|
At this point I have not bought or sold anything but will in the future so thanks for the advice.

As for the fabric. I have purchased some here, but only if it is a familiar brand and the price is fair. I doubt anyone here would attempt to cheat us, but people everywhere have different ideas of what their sale items are worth. 8-) |
