I try to stay under $10 a meter, but I have paid up to $12/meter before. I usually stock up on fabric when there are sales since otherwise I can't really justify purchasing fabric that can be up to $20/meter around here.

STAR 12-10-2010 01:54 PM

$10.00 I think is the highest I have paid, and then I didn't get a full yard. One time i splurged and bought 2.5 yds at 10.00, but I felt horrible afterwards

Oh, aren't they just beautiful! I will have to order some I do try to stay under $10 a yard, but I almost always buy on sale

IrishNY 12-10-2010 02:51 PM

I have a price point of $10 a yard. I just cannot bring myself to pay more than that - there is just no fabric above that price that is worth it to me. Below it, I love it all! :)

I like really high quality fabric, so know I need to pay more for it. Most of what I buy is between $7.50 and $9 a yard, I would guess. But I love a bargain as much the next quilter, and tend to buy backings when I find a good price.

MadQuilter 12-10-2010 02:53 PM

I bought a $16 piece of hand-printed giraffe fabric but I would consider that a "special" purchase in small quantities. Generally I delight in getting sales and if I like it a lot, then I pay the $10/yard fee.

My resolve will be put to the test when I go to Germany in March. My friend has promised to take me to an LQS and I can't not buy something. We'll see.....

quiltsRfun 12-10-2010 02:54 PM

I don't think I've ever bought anything over $10/yd., and very little of that. I like to keep in the $5-7 range if possible, mostly by waiting for sales.

fabric_fancy 12-10-2010 03:03 PM

i won't pay more than $6 a yard. there's many online shops that still have this pricing.

Riversong 12-10-2010 04:25 PM

Im with Carrie. I very seldom buy yardage though. I might get some for borders or binding, but eveything else is sraps,as a rule.

lots2do 12-10-2010 05:07 PM

I start to get nervous over $9. I am trying to stash bust as much as possible.

sewingladydi 12-10-2010 05:32 PM

If I really, really love it, I would go over $10.00. I usually buy on sale, & on line. Just gots tons of fabric @ 2.75 a yard plus shipping at the Cotton Loft. I also check out the sale & red tag at Joann's. And absolutely do not miss a good sale at the LQS.

But on the whole, I rarely pay over $6 per yard. And only if I need something to complete a quilt. And in that case I buy only what I need for that project.

Most of my sewing is charity quilts or items for charity fundraisers (aprons, etc).

If a special gift for a family member or close friend, I'd pay top dollar if it was what I wanted.

luvTooQuilt 12-10-2010 08:05 PM

I wont pay anymore than $10/yd .. $10 is my limit.. I do charity quilts as well.. However for family and gifts I will pay more if its a fabric I absolutely need for their quilt..

b.zang 12-10-2010 08:08 PM

I buy in meters, so get a little more for my money.
$16.99 per meter is a good price
$18.99 per meter is normal
$21.99 per meter is getting pricey but if I need that particular fabric, I still buy it.
Buying below $16.99/m makes me want to jump up and down.

OneMoreQuilt 12-10-2010 08:21 PM

If I really love a piece, I will buy it. Sometimes I just need that special fabric to add pizzazz to a quilt. I truly am a bargain shopper but if the right thing comes along I can go overboard!

quilt3311 12-11-2010 04:15 AM

I once bought 1/2 yard of $20 a yard fabric. Notice I said "ONCE". It was so beautiful I just had to have some. I hung it on a quilt rack for a long time and finally used it in a gift for my DD. I knew she would love it too.
Now in reality--I try to buy on sale as much as possible. Our LQS has some really good clearance sales, so thats where I pick up most of what I buy. If I really need a piece I will go to $8 for small pieces. If I get really desperate for a certain color, I will dye the piece I need.
Our LQS is trying hard to keep the prices down, but with overhead of running the business, we all understand they have to make a profit or they will go out of business.

AnnT 12-11-2010 04:27 AM

I have a tight budget so I try to stay in the $5.00 or less range. I look for fabric on sale or clearance and then buy. I often buy fabric after a holiday for the next year. If I really, really, really like a fabric and/or want to use it for a special person or project, I'll go higher. I recently bought a fabric on-line that I couldn't find anything close by and paid more than I would have locally but it's for a memory quilt for my mom and just is so "Momma". That's about the only exception to my budget. I have changed my mental plan on a project because the fabric was too pricey for me.

Edie 12-11-2010 04:36 AM

I was just thinking - fat quarters are from $1.29 up to, and I have paid, $2.50, which makes it $5.00 to $10.00 a yard. One doesn't think too much buying a fat quarter, but buying a yard of fabric for $10.00 is just ridiculous. Au Contraire - You just bought four fat quarters - how much was that? Five to Ten dollars. So if I see a yard of fabric that I really want, I'll just skip four fat quarters. That wasn't hard now. I can get the fat quarters another time.

If the fabric is so important to you, for whatever reason, and you CAN afford it, get it. It may be your only chance. It may not be at the LQS or JAF (JoAnn Fab) the next time you are there. I paid $8.99 a yard for 11 yards of material - three different fabrics for a quilt. I just may not have enough. I was green enough not to think there would be waste or that I could work myself silly and not get a block to come together and have to deep six the block. That is a fat quarter right there. I have 12 blocks made and 36 to go - 12" blocks.

I have a call into the quilt shop which is about 350 miles away and I just may have to order either from someplace else or make the quilt smaller which I do not want to do, unless I make a humungous border and I don't want to do that because then I will always see "Dummy, you didn't buy enough material." And it is something I should have known. Edie

Moon Holiday 12-11-2010 04:40 AM

No... I have spent $20/yard on Japanese Daiwabo handwoven fabric which I used in quilting/clothing/handbags and would do it again... I love that fabric! (I have spent $30/yard on home dec fabric when I reupholstered furniture.)

uniquelynancy 12-11-2010 04:45 AM

Because I sell my quilts I need to make a profit. That said, I mainly buy on sale or wholesale. If I see a fabric I just HAVE to have, I'll sometimes buy a small piece just for ME. $12 a yard is just too high for me! $9.00 is my limit right now.

Dodie 12-11-2010 04:47 AM

I know this is a difficult time for both quilters and shop owners I have always been one to buy from Quilt shops as I preferred their fabric and service classes and etc. I still do but have had to cut back but mostly I have cut back on books, patterns and magazines those we can borrow and or trade with friends also I make more lap size quilts and smaller things

:-D

Well, thank you for your kind words, Susiequilt! You know, Hoffman is *still* printing that wonderful cardinal fabric. I think that there was a quilt pattern out that called for fussy-cutting the cardinals, and people wanted to know how many bird squares you could get out of a yard.

BTW we only raised the price a dime/yard since you bought it. We - and a lot of other shops out there - are doing all we can to keep quilting affordable.

If it is something that I just have to have I really don't worry about the price. If it something that I just want I won't pay more than $10/yd, if it is just something that I think will look good in my stash then I try to stay between $8 & $9/yd.

kellen46 12-11-2010 06:12 AM

I love a bargain as much as anybody. What I don't like is working with poor quality fabrics and supplies. My time is the most valuable thing I put into a quilt. So if I can only afford small pieces of a good fabric I would rather have that than large bits of crapy fabric. I can make a minature if all I have is snippets. I have paid over $20 for a yard something I just loved, of course I can't yet bring my self to cut into it.

oma66 12-11-2010 06:42 AM

Because we are retired we tend to watch our pennies. I use the 40% and 50% off coupons 95% of the time I shop from several quilting shops. We have a shop here that sells all it's great quilting fabric for $6.95 a yard...and there are 1500 bolts to choose from. It is iffy with Joann's at times, quality and coupons. When I want to buy, the quilting fabric, most of the time, it is already on sale but with a small percentage off so I can not use my coupon for fabric. I shop thrift stores, and I recently showed the fabric I gleaned from shopping Penney's sale rack for cotton curtains and got 10 yards of fabric from 2 prs. of curtains and a bed skirt, already coordinated and they are great quality. But...if I found a fabric that I just could not do without, I might go overboard a little from the norm.

mollymct 12-11-2010 06:45 AM

I'm very new to this, but I have mainly made purchases in the 8-9 dollar range before shipping (shipping stinks!!). I do not have a local shop. I'd love a better deal, but I usually want a few coordinating fabrics and often it's hard to find if the line is "old" enough to be on sale. Then, shopping from multiple places would make shipping unreal. I really love a lot of variety, so I favor shops that will make cuts of less than a half-yard. I see that your shop does that!! I will have to check it out...after Christmas!

MaryKatherine 12-11-2010 06:45 AM

I'm a tad spoiled as my husband and I regularly go to Pennsylvannia and Zaks once a year. (with a list) Here in Canada I will not pay more than $10/metre and really only if I need a fatquarter or to finish something. I often find it cheaper to shop from the states online even with the mail and exchange rates. Our Govn't puts such crazy import duties on stuff here

BettyGee 12-11-2010 07:26 AM

Usually I balk at anything over $9 and I try to stay between $5 and $6; however if it is a pattern that "calls" to me I will usually find a way to rationalize the purchase. If I have a particular project in mind then I "bite the bullet."

Your prices are very competitive and appreciated.

Butterflyblue 12-11-2010 07:27 AM

I have bought fabric at $10 a yard. I would have a really hard time going higher than that, right now.

weezie 12-11-2010 07:44 AM

I hate to pay as much as $10.00/yd. and normally buy only on-sale fabric. Except for a need for more yardage on which to machine embroider theme quilts, I have enough stash to last for years. One time, only, I bought all the fabric for a specific quilt that I wanted to make. I do like that quilt top and have usable leftover fabric, but the total cost was very high and I hope not to do that again. With quilting just my hobby, I can't justify spending that much money on one quilt.

FYI, I am more impressed with Favorite Fabrics than any of the other on-line "catalogs". Your website is very well thought out, very easy to navigate even for a dummy like me, and the fabric variety is fabulous.

joann hussey 12-11-2010 07:57 AM

I have mostly quilt shop fabric for sale, I like to get the best fabric because the quality is better, a lot of time goes into making a quilt and I want it to last . $6.00 and up
is what I will sell it for, if I'm selling

JuneD 12-11-2010 08:22 AM

I am an avid fabri-holic, but I do wait until it's on sale. I can't bring myself to spend $12.99 a yard for something. I love the 'chase' for a good price as well as finding the perfect fabric. I love Clothilde and Keepsake Quilting. I read about Fabric.com here on another thread, so I'm going to go check it out.

Edie,
Did you post the fabric you need here to make sure one of us can't help you? After seeing this board in action, it seems impossible that there is any fabric that we can't lay our hands on if it exists.

greenini 12-11-2010 09:31 AM

Being on a "fixed income", I decided that the only way I could quilt was to get fabric cheaply. Most of my purchases are from thrift stores, remnants, yard sales, etc. I do buy sometimes buy from quilt stores, many times fat quarters if something catches my eye. I have made a few mistakes, buying fabric on e-bay...never again. Got caught up in the "thrill" of the hunt.

That said, do you have a price limit? Or three - for regular cotton, batiks, and backings?

Non-US quilters, feel free to answer, too. We all know your numbers will be different than ours.

For me it depends on where I'm shopping what my limit is price wise. If I'm in a LQS my limit is probably somewhere between $12 and $15 a yard. At that price I'll just buy less than I would have if the price was between $8 and $9 a yard. If I'm in Jo-Ann's or Hobby Lobby my price limit is going to be about $5 a yard. I absolutely will not pay as much for fabric in Jo-Ann's or Hobby Lobby as what I would pay in a LQS. If I'm paying that much for fabric I'll go look thru my LQS.

So far every LQS I've been in has a sale rack. I have purchased fabric as low as $1 a yard at a LQS. I very rarely buy fabric in Jo-Ann's or Hobby Lobby anymore because I'd rather support my local business women.

Janie Q 12-11-2010 10:43 AM

I love sales and am constantly seaching for them. I don't like to pay more that $6 a yard. However I have gone up to $10 for a beautiful batik. I like to save up and buy from Connecting Threads because the prices are reasonable, the sales are great and the shipping is free after $50.

Flying_V_Goddess 12-11-2010 10:59 AM

I'm not really sure. Usually I end up going to the LQS with five bucks and see how much I can get with it. lol

I guess I kind of do. I grew up poor and had to learn how to stretch a dollar so sometimes I don't like spending a whole lot. I sometimes cringe when I see a fabric I like and its $5 a yard. But if its something that I feel like I absolutely have to leave the store with that fabric I'll buy it. Though I'm more reluctant to get it and might wait to get it if its real pricey.

Someone had posted about a woman who was making fabric that was selling at $60 a yard. I said I would never pay that much for fabric unless it was kimono silk hand dyed and embroidered by a Japanese kimono maker and I really liked it.

Ritacarl 12-11-2010 11:04 AM

Before I start a quilt, I can picture it done in my head. In order to achive that image, I have to pay the price. I'm not one that can have mounds of material and have no idea what to make. In a sense the quilt it all done before I start. I'm the same with painting rooms. I can feel if a color is right or wrong for a room. Or what color would be best. I've been hired to do just that for people that have really no scense of color. Not bragging. Just telling it as it is.

quiltluvr 12-11-2010 12:30 PM

My Mom always pounded in my head, get the most for the cheapest. That has followed me thru life.

When it comes to fabric, I don't buy anymore at the current high prices. $9 a yard is the high end of my limit and at that price I won't buy more than 1/2 yard. The quantity of my stash is ruled by the variety of smaller cuts.

It burns me to pay $2.75 for FQ's. Tho' now when I *have* to buy fabric that I don't really need, that's what I'll get now on rare occasions.

G'ma Kay 12-11-2010 01:25 PM

I've never went over $6 yd yet.

crankygran 12-11-2010 01:27 PM

It depends on how loudly it yalls at me. And the bottom line on my check register. Really, I feel as though fabric is as necessary to me as food. If I need it I will get it.

pjustice63 12-11-2010 01:29 PM

I guess I do. I went to a LQS the other day and her Modas were priced at $11.25 per yard. I won't pay that. I hate to see quilt shops go out of business but fear that is what will happen. Too much overhead for most.
I can afford to pay for the fabric but have to draw the line somewhere. Plus I have too much in my stash already. Time to use it.

fivepaws 12-11-2010 02:05 PM

Actually, no matter how gorgeous the fabric is, I think $10.00 a yard is too much for me. Especially when one has to add shipping.
