Just leave it to Elenor to figure out how to simplify something for us! That sounds like a wonderful method--i'm going to have to check it out!

Dresdan Plate is one of my favourite designs, use it a lot. I have a dresden plate ruler bought from Creative Grids, they do online shopping. But you have so many quilt stores over there that you will find one locally.

My very first quilt as a teenager was a dresden plate, with pointy tips. no templates, just measuring.. No one told me it was advanced. I did a LOT of frogging and recutting on that one! No pictures, it wore out years ago. My next quilt will be another, if I ever get my request pile done...

I know this has been a while since u made this place mat, but my question is what did you do after making the plate in other words the back side how was that done if you dont mind thanks

I've made my own templates, just drew something out on paper and then traced it onto the plastic template making stuff. I have all sorts of sizes. Some round, some pointed :)

I've made rounded ones myself. Take a saucer or soda can top or something round (a compass works too!) and make an arc, then measure how long you want the blade to be, and draw another line.

A tip that one of my grandmothers friends taught me, for easier applique, use some double sided fusible webbing like heat n bond lite. Trace a tiny bit of the arc or point and fuse to the blade. Then you can machine or hand applique it down.

They have thin templates and wider ones. I have made several and they go up quick. I fold my blades rightside together and sew a 1/4 inch across the top. When you turn it, you have a perfect point. Then I sew the blades together starting at the top to keep them uniform and I machine applique the plate on using the blind hem stitch. I have made the 3D fans by sewing light and dark strips together and then cut the blades out.
