I precut...I get bored with cutting so I want to get it done and all out the way, then all my blocks get built together

I have made log cabins and never used a pattern, but have I drawn up patterns for others and I personally prefer to cut strips to fit ahead of time. (if it calls for a specific size in the pattern that's what I would cut.) I love some of E. B's techniques but the idea of trimming each time I sew on a a log cabin is not my idea of necessary.

I too like to cut strips to size, too much extra work to sew and then have to trim too!

I love Eleanor Burns Log Cabin quilt in a day book. I just made my first one ( Esther Grace's Butterfly quilt, for those who have been following that blog )and also taught it to our ladies at church at the same time. Haven't you heard that teaching others is the best way to learn something yourself?

Needing information on the Eleanor Burns Log Cabin quilt from anyone who has made it. I had some E B instructions long ago, but I think she has revised them in recent years (not sure). I have heard her version is a good one, and would like to hear from someone who has made it. For that matter, I would like to hear from anyone who has made ANY Log Cabin quilt, and what you have to say about your method. Do you cut your strips to size, or cut long strips and sew and cut? Thanks so much.

EB's instructions are great and easy to follow. However, I decided to double the size of the strips on one of these quilts. Not a good idea! There was only one person in the family that had a room/floor big enough to pin baste it. I even took a row of blocks from the quilt. I haven't finnished quilting it yet. It rests on a dinning room chair, all alone.

Sorry that happened to you quilter68. Don't give up though, you'll be glad, someday, that you didn't leave it on a dining room chair, all alone, for long.

I pieced a log cabin quilt a couple of years ago using Judy Martin's method of cutting all the sizes before sewing. It seemed to take forever to cut everything, but I was glad I did once I started sewing.
I'm in the midst of cutting out strips for a log cabin-like quilt, this time using the 12" X 24" June Tailor Shape Cutter Plus with the slots. Making a cutting map to cut the various sizes on the lengthwise grain as Judy Martin recommends was a real time-saver. |
My one suggestion about a log cabin quilt is to square up the block after each round. If it's off a little in the center, it will be off at the outer edges too...... learned this one the hard way.... :)
