My stash is Manageable....for now lol But I am too easily tempted when entering fabric stores. Most of my stash are FQ's stored in boxes but these are getting full quick!!

caspharm 08-21-2011 07:48 AM

I have about 15 -12 gallon totes of fabric yardage. I also have Artbin satchels with projects that I need to get done, now that I finally have time. :)

ShirlinAZ 08-21-2011 07:56 AM

I never wanted a stash, but somehow mine has grown and is still growing. And I'm sewing as fast as I can!

willferg 08-21-2011 08:03 AM

it's causing me anxiety, not pleasure - time to shop from my stash!

Me, too! I suggested that our local Project Linus group have a fabric swap -- good way to get rid of some fabric to a good cause, right? Then the coordinator found three totes of fabric in her garage and asked me to go through it to see what might be good for the swap...what sweet torture.

I've since added more to my stash than what I've pulled. And I'm not enjoying it! My sewing room is a mess and I'm not motivated to finish two UFOs I have. Too much of a good thing, I fear...

Okay So I have a huge stash. A full walk in closet. I store my FQ's in boxes in there. My private stash and solids and a few kits to be made. Then there is the business stash. (you do know it co-mingles) in the studio. I have officallly run out of room. But some how I keep collecting. It does seem to me that the fabric multipys on its own at nite. Here are a few photos enjoy!

I have very good reasoning on my stash building. I buy what I can afford now. I add it to the shelves in my stash closet. My reasoning ----I won't be able to afford any fabric when I retire!
The way the economy is going--I may have to work until I am 80, take a week off, and then die!!

Donna Hall 08-21-2011 08:34 AM

I realy pared down my stash. I gave it to a teacher in Oklahoma who is teaching quilting in her class at school. Many of these students can not afford fabric even at WalMart prices. The only stash I am building now is batiks for applique and other projects. I do have a stash of 30's. I am not buying fabric unless it is needed for a project. Oh yes, I do have quite a few kits, so I will not run out of anything to sew.

crazy cat lady 08-21-2011 08:54 AM

I also have an office cabinet like yours, but mine's in the process of organization, not finished yet. Yours looks great!

yayaquilts 08-21-2011 08:56 AM

I recently cleaned up my 'stash' and reorganized it. That took a lot longer than I had anticipated (2 full days)! I do have more than I thought I did, but I haven't actually calculated how much (I think I'd rather not know. I wouldn't want to feel guilty that I might have too much!). I love fabric and quilters can't have too much fabric, now can we!?!

Cleaning out the closet shelves and basket organizer, full of fabric, made me aware of saving some fabric I really didn't like, and/or wondering why I bought it in the first place?!!. So I also weeded out the fabric I knew I wouldn't ever use, and have given it away. I, too, put fabric and patterns for specific projects together in project bags, which made me aware of more To Do's and UFO's than I thought I had! I love being able to see what I have in the way of colors and patterns now that my fabric collection is neat! That way I can focus on adding the fabrics I really need!

Although I have sewn all my life, (YIKES! figured out I have been sewing for over 50 years!! I ask you, how can that be? I'm a young 60 years!!!!), and made some quilts over 30 years ago, I only really got hooked on "quilting" again (my hubby calls it an "obsession" but I prefer to call it my "passion") about 5 1/2 years ago, when I started working in a quilt shop. At that time, I did not have a "stash!" I prefer to call my fabric a "collection," since I am a "collector" of many things!!

I attend 3-4 quilt retreats a year with some BFF's. After organizing my fabric, I decided to take a few UFO's to finish at retreats and maybe only 1 new project to work on so as to not stifle my creativity! I've also decided that I need to go to my collection first when starting a project.

I've recently made 2 gift quilts for friends and took all the fabrics needed from my collection! I'm going to be starting a Block of Month quilt from McCalls Quilting with my BFF and I am using fabrics from my collection! It's a good feeling to be using what I have first! You can see my sewing room and fabric collection on my blog[url][http://kpscarlettandchief.blogspot.com/2011/07/where-i-sew.html]

sharin'Sharon 08-21-2011 09:16 AM

You are quite organized. I keep hoping for that day.....soon.

grannypat7925 08-21-2011 09:49 AM

3 - 5 drawer chests and a 3 drawer plastic chest. I have to hunt before I can sew (ha!ha!).

Dianne1 08-21-2011 10:23 AM

I think the reality show Hoarders, should take a look as some of us quilters.

guntherquilter 08-21-2011 10:25 AM

I would NEVER add up the yardage in my stash! That is a useless number--not good for anything!! haha

This is why I feel at home here. No one thinks it is weird to have a room for fabric.

This is part of mine.....have another smaller stack, but haven't taken a pic yet.

bob1414 08-21-2011 12:05 PM

I would guess I have 2500-3000 yards. 90% is batik and the rest is probably Kaffe Fassett.

scrapykate 08-21-2011 12:18 PM

I just told my husband that I dibbed the new room he just created above the garage as mine. Now if he would just get it finished, I could really sort and spread out and go to town with projects. right now I'm cramped into a small room where I can't find half of my stash....

QuiltnLady1 08-21-2011 12:23 PM

I think knowing how many yards I have is way too much information! LOL! I really haven't started the big bins -- I have a corner shelf that is 3' on one side and 5' on the other that isi about 6' tall and it is stuffed with some small project boxes on top. I have another 10-15 small project boxes on pegboard shelves -- one larger bin with 5" squares and one with 6"squares. Two 35 gal bins of scraps and another of interfacing. 2 wall of a walk in closet in the laundry room (one with home deck and cotton and one with flannel) that I can't easily get because of the batting in front. I have about 9' or overhead kitchen-type upper cabinets in the laundry room with fabric and 2 shelves in a guest room linen closet with fabric and the guest closed full of unfinished projects, yarn and batting. I also have bags of fabric that does not yet have a home, but I keep looking for extra space. Sigh -- I really need to do some stash busting work but have not got the energy right now.

CAS49OR 08-21-2011 12:37 PM

I think some of you could open a re-sell shop from your stash! I think I'm limited by space and ideas to keep purchasing material. I thought I was doing bad having four unfinished or "to be started" projects.

Margie 08-21-2011 12:50 PM

My prayer is that I am healthy and live long enough to use all the fabric I have lol.

valleyquilter 08-21-2011 02:28 PM

How big is my stash? Very small. If at any time you want to share some let me know. Just send it my way!

I was thinking some quilters have definite issues with collecting fabric. I have a decent enough stash, but can't stay out of the stores! Something always catches my eye.

MargeD 08-21-2011 03:39 PM

I'm not sure exactly, but I have 20 73 gal (approx.) in my LR/DR, along with about 10 more in my bedroom and closet. This is about1/2 to 3/4 of what I originally had in my 3-bedroom house before we moved to a 2-bedroom apt. My husband gritched about that amount, while my girlfriend was tickled pink that I had whittled it down so far. I have since re-sorted and refolded about a third of those bins, so I have even gotten rid of 3 -4 bins that size. I just did a family reunion quilt for the July 4th family reunion, and didn't have to buy any additional fabric. Yes!!! I was very proud of myself. Part of that was because my family sends fabric in various sizes once I pick a color, and I come up with the background and backing fabric. Fortunately, my girlfriend, who inherited most of my stash remembered a large piece of fabric that I had given to her, so there was the backing fabric. Even when I ran out of the one background fabric (because I improperly cut some too short), I switched to another one - I figured if I had trouble seeing which side was the front and which was the back, my family wouldn't notice that it was different. And if they do, tough. I personally was very proud of the amount of fabric I purged and what I brought with me. Actual yardage - anybody's guess.

mountain deb 08-21-2011 03:53 PM

I am so not going there. I have a stash. Is it organized, not yet. Do I have projects - oh yea. Some days I want to chuck it, but then I get sane again and naw, I will keep it for just a little longer. One of these days keeps right on slipping by me.

I'm not sure how much there is in the various places. I'm in the process of redoing a redo of my sewing room.

I have this problem that I get an idea for a quilt. I have to wash the fabric, wait for it to dry then iron it. By the time it's ironed, I'm thinking another project.

Here is part of my stash.

This is only a small portion of the fabric. Look close...

Where ever there is fabric, there is at least 1 cat! That's why the new room has all kinds of plastic bins! Lucky, Lucy and Luna

I just visited my friend out of the city and what a surprise. She has become a fairly active quilter in fits and starts and has more fabric than I have ever seen up close and personal. And it is everywhere - in bins, boxes, on the floor, on chairs and tables. I have but a small portion of what she has and I feel uncomfortable with my stash and am doing my best to get rid of it. I promise not to buy because at the moment I like it - only what is absolutely essential. OMG!!!! who would've thought!!!

cherrio 08-21-2011 05:04 PM

1 large rubbermaid. not the huge one. just a large clear tub. and 2 15x15 x6 drawers. little sewing space here so I kinda buy per project.

I would have had a different answer to the stash question had you asked on Friday. Yesterday I went to a quilter's stash estate sale (the lady died at 80+ and had some fabric from JCPenny when it sold fabric). The sale had begun on Friday with fabric in bins sorted by color and when my friend went on Friday morning there were TABLES of bins (bins were also owned by the deceased) down the drive way and into the garage. By the time I arrived there were only bins in the garage and they were still full! They said the woman could go to her garage and tell you which bin to look in for which specific fabric. She was a fabric hoarder but actually found time to make quilts!

They sold the fabric (1/2-5 yard pieces) by the pound at $5 per pound but reduced it to $4 per pound since it was the afternoon of the 2nd day. I had set a budget of $20 and when I told her that, she sold me the fabric I had selected for the $20 even though it was supposed to be $56.

I then bought wonderful quilt books that were 10% of the purchase price!!

Wish I could have gone on Friday but I had to work to pay for this stash building habit!!

Nanjun 08-21-2011 06:10 PM

Your stash looks so nice and neat. Wish you would come help me get mine looking as well.

I was looking for a CERTAIN project tonight that I decided to try & finish & just HAD to get in this closet! ERRRRRr bad idea!

travelingquilter 08-22-2011 08:19 PM

there is 6 ft length of storage shelves, in the garage,--both sides and the end of the closet with boxes of fabrics to the ceiling, then there is a closet with fabric on shelves...top to bottom,.then 2 ...4 ft high closets with shelves full, then in the shed i have 5 boxes of folded fabrics, plus 6 plastic bins on a shelf. tell me i'm doing good.... i gave a friend 3 full boxes of fabric (for her women's church group to make quilts with) made me feel a little 'lighter'!! i am currently cutting up 3 boxes of novelty prints i have had around and kept adding to. they willmake cute kid quilts.

smiley_54834 08-22-2011 08:50 PM

sorry I have not a clue all I know is I have built 3 room additions on and I have run out of room. It is a sin to have as much as I have...

Annaquilts 08-22-2011 08:58 PM

Ooooohhh I see some fabrics in there. I'll come over to iron and fold in return for some 1/2 yards. LOL Your kitties are adorable!
