I used to run into this a lot when I first started painting show cars. They would want me to justify a $10,000 paint job. After explaining the amount of money that the materials cost and the amount of time it took getting the body ready for paint they sorta understood. Now its a joke with a lot of my clients and friends that if you have to ask me how much it cost for a paint job you can not afford me.
Funny thing is now $10K is a very cheap price for a paint job and is what I normally charge to paint a bike for. So you might need to adapt that philosophy, "If you have to ask then you cant afford me!" Billy |
'Sounds like a "tire kicker" to me. You know the type, all blow, wannabe bigshot. 'Eager to impress you with his money and to imply that you're not worth it.
Stick to your guns. In fact, if he does shop around and come back to you, go up in price. You're still not getting what it's really worth. "That's my advice and I'm stickin' to it." Karen |
If he says that's not doable, you say "okay". That's the end of the transaction to me. :)

Since he's a hunter tell him you'd like to have a real bear skin rug. Would he please go to Canada, get a permit, kill one, have the meat processed, the head and skin made into a rug and give you a price for that. He'll start listing the costs of everything including his time off from work. Then tell him that you just want a small bear and couldn't he do it for $200? |

That is why, when I make quilts for others at their request, I make them buy ALL the materials and charge just for my time to piece it and if they want it quilted, it's extra and they buy the batting. It's the only way I have found to make nonquilters understand what all is involved in making a quilt.
The last time I went with a friend of a friend to Joanne's. She loved a certain fabric and when the saleslady and I told her how much yardage she needed for a full size bed, for the backing, at $8.50 per yard--she told me she had to rethink the whole thing.! |
Heard a good one recently! Someone asked a friend to make a quilt in exchange for a Christmas cake!!!! Great deal!!!! Needless to say No deal!!!

To have a trophy deer head mounted is around $900 to $1000+ around here. He'll probably buy an imported one with "toe catchers" quilting. When it falls apart after the first washing, he'll realize "you get what what you pay for"

This is good information Jan, Thanks!
Joan_quilts...stick to your guns (lol) your talent, time, etc. is worth every cent you charge. If your friend wants the "thrift store" price, tell him to go shop at Goodwill. |
