What a great idea!

And a cute gesture. More exciting than just cash.

I also agree about the personality of a sewing machine.

Another cute idea would be to get a.....

sewing machine Christmas ornament
coffee mug with a sewing machine on it
sewing machine music box
sewing machine print fabric

sewing machine anything..... but not the actual sewing machine with the gift certificate or monies in the package with a hand written note or card from him expressing his desires for the monies to be spent on a new machine.

Her heart might already be set on a certain machine for the $400. Then she could use the rest to build a stash of fabrics to try out on the new machine or extra feet for machine....

I agree a machine is a personal choice. Maybe he could find a sewing machine ornament so she would have a box to open!!! No matter how he presents it....what a guy!

A machine is such a personal choice. I agree that he should tell her to pick one out and he'll pay for it. She's happy, and he doesn't make a mistake he'll be paying for - forever!

Elna's are good and some LQS's may be having a sale on them right now. There's one in a town nearby my house that was lowering their prices by $250 to make room for the new model and also discounting their floor model. That brings the price down quite a bit. If there's a store that has machines on sale this would be a great time to give her a gift certificate so she can pick out her own and possibly get more for the money.

I think the gift certificate would be best too, so she can choose her own.

I love my Juki TL 98 Q for piecing quilts and quilting and they are around that price from Sewing Machines Plus. It outsews my expensive Janome by a whole lot and also sews through tough seams like a knife through butter. I doubt if he could go wrong with this machine because it could later be used with a quilting frame.

I'll be the one who disagrees with this statement! My DH bought me a sewing machine for our 25th anniversary. He did loads of research, visited many shops and even sat through all the demonstrations. Then he picked out the machine and surprised me. I absolutely love it and have been using it for the last 2 1/2 years with no desire to get something different! Caveat: It wasn't a slam dunk on his part - he did a lot of legwork!

I have had two friends receive a new machine from their husbands and both were disappointed when they started using them. I would say he should take her shopping and let her try some out and let her choose.

I second that 100%. My Brother is about 10 years old now and she sews as well today as the first day I took her out of the box. Since she only goes forwards and backwards, there was not a lot of fancy stuff to learn.....I bought an Elna Quilters Pro over the summer and altho I love her, I need to keep the book handy!! See if you can find a Brother 1500, at a sewing machine dealer that was taken in on a trade....new, they are about 800 and I would expect to find one used for about 500 or so with a good warenty. Your wife will LOVE it.....I've quilted King size quilts with this baby.....the throat size is wonderful.
