Forgot to ask what is the name of this pattern?

Take the map from this page: http://route66guys.blogspot.com/2010...s-17-days.html
to Kinko's and have it blown up to whatever size you want. Then, using a light box and a permanent marker, and copy the map onto a large piece of muslin. You could use that for the center back of the quilt and the Route 66 fabric for a border around that. |
I also love the map idea. Maybe a map of the U.S. then while he is cuddling with that wonderful quilt he can decide on all the places he would love to visit once he is grown.

Use the leftovers but make roads across the back with black or gray fabric. You could make an entire City grid map with intersecting streets and street signs of names that would mean something to him. You don't have to go overboard but it might be a nice little conversation starter.

If you go onto eQuilter.com and put in road signs and keep going past page one you will find lots of fabrics that feature car things and highway signs. They are my favorite on-line supply. The photos have always proven to be true to reality.
Its a great boy quilt! |
I like Ifstampers suggestion. I've done this on a quilt back .
|
The first thing I thought of was to find a profile of a mustang or some other car, take it to Kinkos and have it blown up to about 36" or larger. Use your Rt.66 fabric and cut out the large car in one piece. Applique it to some quieter fabric so the silhouette will stand out.

Ditto make a scrappy back from the left over front Either way it's a cute quilt he'll love it
|
What a fun quilt - he'll love it. This is just what I'd do, make the backing out of orange fabric to pick up the orange on the front (my favorite color) and I realize that's a very personal choice. You have a lot of good suggestions given here. And how about using your extra Rte 66 fabric to make your grandson a big comfy pillow?
