A thread rack! I wish I could find the photo, but one of the embroidery groups I belong to had a member's picture of the most amazing thread rack. It looked like it was made from the frame of a folding louvered door with thread holder rods running across. It was fabulous.

My husband made me a big board for ironing, I wouldn't be without it. He is very supportive of my quilting in many ways, but the things he has made for me are the best!!

So I love the quilting RV idea! Recently, we remodeled the basement (my studio) adding a bathroom, updated electricity and updated lighting. One of the best things was purchasing linking 24 inch flourescent lights and adding them to the underside of my longarm. I can turn on just the middle ones or as many as I like. It lights up very well so I can see the underside of the quilt and the quality of stitching. I hope the picture helps. If she uses mirrors on the table, it reduces the amount of bending and such for quality control. Good question by the way!

Really good ideas above. The best gift I received was a chair from the office supply that can be raised and lowered. It rolls around, swivels and can be adjusted for back support. Before this chair came to live in my sewing room, I suffered aching back, arms and neck. I can now sit at the machine for longer periods of time without pain.

Can we clone you?
How about a good comfy chair thats adjustable
I have no brother, but, if you can clone me just send my commission in the mail. These are some really great ideas and thanks to all who have commented. As for making dinner naked, I really don't want her to lose her appetite. lol

How about a day or weekend away to a place where they have wonderful quilt shops. Always to go away and spend quality time together. Then maybe alittle bit of the "green stuff" to take home some little goodies.

Check out some auctions for a vintage kitchen table (all wood), I paid $17.50 for mine at auction. They can easily be converted into a cutting/sandwiching table by adding removable plywood tops, height can be adjusted with bed risers.

After a long day of quilting, shop hopping, or darn near anything...I'd kill for a good old fashioned FOOT RUB!
get a pegboard and some dowel rods that will fit into the holes. Cut the dowel rods about 3 inches long. Paint the pegboard a real pretty color, just for her, glue the 3" dowel rods into the holes and then hang on the all. Put a small piece of wood behind the pegboard so it will stick away from the wall at the bottom. (At a Angle)
Something else paint every 3" dowel rod a different color. She will be able to hang all of her thread on this. I have thread, rulers, scissors, rotary cutters and even patterns hanging from mine. I love it, mine is white but I am thinking about taking it down and painting it plus the dowel rods. verna2197 |
How about the 'Big Board' ironing board. Handy if it just fits on top of her regular ironing board or a cabinet/dresser in the sewing area.
You've already got a lot of nice suggestions, so I'll just give you a thumbs up. I'm sure you'll come up with just the right thing for her.
Lighting? A flannel wall or movable panel. You are great!
Mr. Curmudgeon... you're the best... I can't add anything to these wonderful suggestions! Just wanted to thank you for being such a sweetie!
Wow, this thread has so many ideas that now I have a list of things I never would have thought of on my own!
show her this post..what a guy....

Metalic fabrics the owner of Crossroads Quilt Shop in Reed city told me they are going up over 11.00 after the first if the year.So collect them now.
make her a thread caddy - the type with dowels that hangs on the wall.
I got one of the Fons and Porter one at JoAnn's with a 40% off coupon. It was reg.$24.99.

You sound like a great husband!!!
My DH put up kitchen cabinets (upper and lower) and a counter top on two walls of my sewing room. I use the cabinets for my stash and I have space for my computer and phone. It's really great and keeps me organized. Good luck! |
I think a lap top computer would be nice.
It could be used for watching how to quilt tuts and to all things quilting. It is helping me a lot. I agree great husbands are hard to find. Mine is tops. |
Gift certificates to her favorite fabric shops--large ones!!!!!!!!!!
Great idea's. Your very thoughtful and I'm sure you'll do something great.
How is the lighting? An Ott light maybe or one of those little lights that attach to the machine Diane C
How about a light-box? My son who is a carpenter made me one for Xmas, and I will cherish it forever.
How about a thread holder that has the bobbins with the same thread at the same place--like pegs or something. If you built shelves, I am sure you have some good ideas how to make it. Trying to keep my bobbins with the same spools of thread is a frustration to me.--Just a thought.

The one thing I've always wanted was an ironing board on wall hinges about 18w x 40L rectangle this way its only there when needed. I also re-purposed a couple big tackle boxes for threads and notions that stack these work out better than anything you could find in a fabric store --KEEP reading we will give you enough ideas for years to come so keep a pad and pen handy :P
Clone because although my husband is very supportive of my quilting obsession, I can't get him to shop, build, bounce ideas, and rarely set foot into my sewing room. I will, however, show him all of this post and maybe, just maybe, he'll more clearly understand just why I do what I do in that little room!! And I'd never ask him to make dinner 'in the raw' - he uses a lot of olive oil and would end up in the ER!!

I love my two ruler racks - of course, I am known around here as the Ruler Queen, so I really need that.
How about a comfortable chair to sit in at her machine?
I have thread cones that take up alot of room. Myself, I'd like a peg board on the wall with a spot for the thread cones. A design board is awesome.
You are so thoughtful to want to give her something that she wouldn't ask for or think of. Your a GEM! |
A design wall.
just buy her some fat quarters or some threads. She probably loves getting new things. I love that you care enough. Its' so nice to see a DH so supportive. Mine is too. He is also from Tennesee!
thats a great idea
think I will try that |
