I'm blessed that I have a sewing room. But it gets smaller each time I go to the LQS. Some of my fabric is in a wardrobe cabinet (bought at thrift shop - it could have been a tv cabinet in its first life), other fabrics are in containers, seasonal fabrics are in bins under the bed, and still more is in the under the stairs closet. Organized - hum not there yet. Maybe when I grow up.

I like the idea of putting each project in their own bin.

I've also been blessed to have a sewing room. I have a large stash, so can't help you there. However, I can help you with storing projects. It has helped me so much since I've been storing my UFOs in plastic bags. I started off buying 2 gallon bags, but they are hard to find. then, my DD joined Avon. they have the neatest bags. so, find an Avon lady, lol.

Organized? hahahahaha. But I will mention, those thingies one hangs in closets to stuff shoe boxes in or sweaters, etc, make nice storage for material that is ready to sew into quilts. Totes, yes, lots and lots of totes and one can hang hooks all over to hang bags of new acquisitations(spelling off). You can cut the legs in two for those tall plastic shelves to make short shelves to avoid the need to unstack many shoe boxes to get to one you want, or to hold long flat totes like drawers. They will hold one long flat tote and a plastic shoebox each.

I have organized chaos. I use the clear food boxes for ufos. I use new pizza boxes( most pizza shops will give you a few for free or just a few $) for projects that have made it into block form. I have sacks with fabric and patterns that have yet to be started. Scraps seem to pile up in several locations. I also could use someone to get me organized as well!

This is my sewing "nook". Pardon the mess, please! This room is also currently being used as our homeschool room and my husband's at home office. I have a (relatively!) small stash. All of my stash and projects that I'm not in the middle of, are in boxes under the table. The blue bin on the right is batting, the two banana boxes next to it are my actual stash- one box of darks, one box of lights. I do also have a smaller box of crumbs and a box of miscellaneous fabrics. The other cardboard boxes are individual UFOs waiting to be gotten to- a partially quilted quilt is in one, with it's binding fabric, a quilt top and it's backing fabric are in another, a partially pieced top and all of it's fabric are in another. One of the blue bins to the left holds my knitting stuff, the other holds some smaller UFOs and "stuff". The three drawer unit to the left of my sewing machine holds some supplies and a couple of small projects that I want to keep handy, and the small drawer unit on the table holds tools- marking pencils, cutter, small ruler, pins, quilting needles, etc. My quilt that I'm currently quilting is not in the picture- it hangs out in the house where it's handy. I keep it and a baggie of the things I need to work on it, in a large L.L. Bean bag- having it in the bag makes it easy to grab when I'm on my way out the door.
So that's how my stuff is organized! I'm glad to finally have it organized, it was quite a jumble until recently. |
Kristen, you did a great job organizing a wise work space. Thumbs up on the home schooling. I know it's a lot of work but you won't regret the time when your kids are grown. We home schooled the younger 4 for 7 years and I couldn't be more pleased with the fine adults they have become.

Organized??... I'm with Charlee on this one...lol We are supposed to be organized??
Actually.. I have a small sewing room too. I FORCE myself to clean up and reorganized after each project I complete or it's too insane. I have two banks of cupboards that I have fabrics folded in by colors/novelty/Christmas/Americana/batiks and border prints. That helps, but let me riffle ONE section and I have to retidy up the whole works. I accidentally CUT UP some gorgeous batik I was going to make a jacket out of and THAT made me invent a new organizational rule. I was SERIOUSLY ANNOYED with myself. I put the fabrics/pattern I have in mind for a project in the same BAG and label it. I don't open that bag for another OTHER reason then to start that project. ♥ |
