I look for comparable items on Etsy and ArtFire. I charge a bit less because in our area the economy is pretty bad, and I don't want to take advantage of anyone.

These are very nice and well made. I'd say 10-14 is a good price.

$8-$10 would be right in the ball park. $4 is giving it away.

lpsewing 07-11-2011 09:39 PM

They are adorable.......I'd ask $15.00

M.I.Late 07-11-2011 10:12 PM

I also like Charisma's $12.00 OK $11.99

smagruder 07-12-2011 02:52 AM

I agree... no less than $10... you have the fabric, not a lot but you did have to buy it, your time, and it is UNIQUE! Don't undersell your talent.

DeeBooper 07-12-2011 03:01 AM

ditto.....10-12$

judi43 07-12-2011 03:09 AM

I've been making that little wallet for quite a few years now & giving them to my friends. The Quilting girls really like them for Quilt Shows & you don't need to carry your big purse. They go togeather pretty fast & use up scraps.

Sheree from Chicago 07-12-2011 03:21 AM

I may be way out in left field...........I would charge 20-25. You really did a beautiful job and I think your time/talent is valuable. Just sayin.

antiquegirl68 07-12-2011 03:28 AM

I love the wallet where can I get the pattern? I am just starting out but I would love to try and attempt to make one.

DMotyl 07-12-2011 03:30 AM

If you only charge $4, people do not respect all the work you have put it into it including the little personalized "extras" you did. People often think that b/c it is homemade, it should be cheaper. I find that is not the usual case. Charging $4 is a give away. Your purse is very cute and worth around $10 or more if the economy of your area can support it.

BMP 07-12-2011 03:32 AM

No less than $10.00

jitkaau 07-12-2011 03:40 AM

I get $10 for the ones I design myself.

Dolphyngyrl 07-12-2011 03:45 AM

$10, maybe 8 for a friend, you have to think of cost of materials

mjsylvstr 07-12-2011 03:46 AM

the buttons alone are going to cost half of what you say you might charge.

Check out your costs and your time and give yourself a bit of profit.

They are adorable......and $10. I think, would be minimum

beauty844 07-12-2011 03:54 AM

My mom always told me that your time is worth something.
So, if the patterns cost three dollars, the fabric costs one dollar than you must make a formula (like three times the cost of the material) to determine you costs.
Remember handmade in the USA is special.
Handmade in the third world country not so much

piepatch 07-12-2011 04:02 AM

I am not sure what I would charge, never having made one, probably $8.00-$10.00, but I do know $4.00 is not enough!

Drew 07-12-2011 04:05 AM

I think $10 would be a good price. Your work and fabric choices are great!

pkelly1947 07-12-2011 04:09 AM

I'd pay $10 for one.

romanojg 07-12-2011 04:18 AM

think about how much time you put in; even if it only takes you an hour to do at $4 take away the cost of materials so how much does that leave you making per hour; I'm guessing less than a $1 an hour. Would you work for anyone for that wage? Even if it is for family or friends.

Jean in Ohio13452 07-12-2011 04:24 AM

Just because they charge higher in shops doesn't mean anyone is buying...Economy of the Area is a good consideration. I have seen items I like but can't buy because the price is too high even though the workman ship is A+. I know you are suppose to charge for materials, time and work...

dreamquilter 07-12-2011 04:32 AM

I haven't seen the pattern, but does the designer give permission to make and sell the finished product? If not stated on the pattern, you may be in violation of the copyright law if you do.

katlady3 07-12-2011 04:45 AM

3 times the cost of all the material you used to make the purse.

grannypat7925 07-12-2011 04:46 AM

$8 to $10 is what sounds reasonable to me.

I already brought this up and it was skimmed over...

apparently the OP only made the topic and is not reading/responding to it!

as for what to charge..it really does matter most about LOCATION...I can put the same exact hand made item in 3 locations and it has to have 3 different prices. In this area(rural mostly) I would NOT make money on it, it would have to sell at cost or below! I can take it closer to the city and might make a $1 profit( factoring in MORE time and gas to get it there), but there is MORE competition, OR I can take to a larger city, more metro, less comp. for hand made, and can make a double profit on it....

BUT a basic formula for handsewn items is this, cost of materials used(not what you bought, but what you actually USED), double that cost and add 25% for labor! SO if you used $2 worth of fabrics, thread and a snap, you double that to $4 and add 25% which makes it $5.00!
NO matter what you "think" you/your time are worth, it is really only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
I would buy this item for $5.00, (perhaps many of them for gifts)BUT, I would walk away laughing at $10!

I agree....$10-$12 each. Consider the time and materials, even if they are made from scraps. You had to pay for it at some point.

Jean in Ohio13452 07-12-2011 05:03 AM

I agree on the formula... and as for the pricing too... You will only get what the customer is willing to pay...

Unless you make them for a Charity craft show where the Slightly higher price could be reflected in " $2.00 of this price goes to the Charity named..." sometimes people are willing to pay the higher price then...???

Deborah12687 07-12-2011 05:04 AM

I always mark my items a bit higher and offer a discount of a few dollars. People just like to get a bargain and you get the price that you want to sell them for. I have been selling arts and hand crafts for 30 + years and I always sell a lot by doing this.

kskwilter 07-12-2011 05:12 AM

A lady I used to work with did sewing for people...(of course it was mostly clothing)...She charged $3 per pattern piece..and then $3 an hour for her work...so if something had 4 pieces...and took an hour...the price was $15. She figured she didn't make a lot...but at least was paid for her efforts. It is hard to know what to charge...I've been burned more than once..in only being paid for the cost of the fabric....(I don't learn quickly!! LOL) So speak up...your time is valuable...in addition to the cost of the fabric/supplies.

jfs 07-12-2011 05:14 AM

For handmade items, I was advised to multiply 300 times the cost of supplies, since it's very hard to figure labor costs when you make it yourself. If your supplies were $5, then you should charge at least $15. The item looks like its worth at least that. Nice job.

Don't forget the time,fabric & buttons $$$$$ $12 is reasonable

elm 07-12-2011 05:26 AM

A local shop sells small locally made purses for about $10. When there are street fares, people have stalls and sell the purses for $6 for a small one opening purse with a velcro closing to $12 for a multi pocket with embelishments.
Remember to calculate the time it takes you to make the purse as well as all the materials and a little for electricity.
The purses you made look really nice.

WMUTeach 07-12-2011 05:29 AM

Ever so long ago when I was doing the craft show circuit, I had a friend suggest that when pricing an item to decide on a reasonable hourly wage, say $10 per hour. Keep track of how long it takes to make the item, say 60 minutes and double it. That would cover your time, talent and materials.

I am sure that if you were making them assembly line style you would take less time so,……I think the $10 - $12 dollar is not unreasonable but do charge more than $4.

This is Just a suggestion. You are getting lots of good direction form the board. Pick one and return to your machine and sew on!

conniebrooks 07-12-2011 05:31 AM

They are really cute. I also think $4 is way too cheap. I'm sure it took over 1 hour plus material. I would say $10 or $12 also. Don't under sell your work! They are really nice.

lauriequilts 07-12-2011 05:33 AM

I would charge at least $10.00.

joysewer 07-12-2011 05:34 AM

These are really great looking!!! I agree with everyone else that $4 is like giving it away! I would not charge less than $8 and you should probably charge $10 to $12.

canuckninepatch 07-12-2011 05:45 AM

My first impression is $15. would be a fair price, but then I live in Canada and everything is more expensive here. Think about this.......if you charge too little, EVERYONE is going to want one, and you may get so that you just hate making them, and feel resentful. I would say, either give them as gifts to special people, or charge enough that you will feel it is worth it to you to do it. Hope that helps! C9P

Your keyrings look like they are color coordinated, too. JMHO

I agree with above - $4 just isn't enough.
