i put my large spools in a cup, stick a fork through the spool so that thread will feed through evenly. it works. they also sale thread holders on ebay.

If you are having problems with any thread, setting it in a container in back and to the right of your machine will often solve the problem. It unspools the thread differently than from your spindle. If you use lots of thread this way, you can tape a paperclip or fishing pole line guide to help guide the thread in the right path. My machine has a special little indentation to hold a little loop for this, but I use a cut off paper clip.

Here's a picture of the cone thread holder I use. It works really well. Get the metal one though, Dritz sells a plastic one at Joanns but I found it's too light and can jump around or fall over.
