For crumb quilts you WANT the edges to fray. That's the charm.
I make lots of crumb blocks and sew them with seams that are done just like regular blocks, No fraying on mine. Sometimes if the fabric is very small I use a seam width that's smaller than 1/4", but when I quilt them I make sure to ditch around each piece so they don't have a chance of coming undone or fraying open. I use adding machine paper....it is easier to sew small strips together....you just have to cut the sides even when you have a whole roll finished ...got the idea on th QB...i`ve done quite a few quilts this way...
