My mom used a panel for a baby quilt for my 29 year old daughter. It's still in one piece but well loved if you know what I mean. It is beautiful and my daughter took it everywhere- it was her " blankie".

I think the term evolved with quilting by hand was the "only" way to make a quilt. Some bright person decided to help speed up the process by creating the already put together pattern on fabric and the "quilt police" decided to give the cheater fabric the name of "cheater." I like the term preprinted fabric better.

I usse them as backing a lot, sometimes the "cheater" looks better than the front. lol

There is a lady quilting a piece of fabric in my Wed. morning sewing group. It is blocks about 2 inches square in baby colors and it is turning out to be a really nice quilt. No cheating involved there!

I made one baby quilt that way- backed with Minkee. The family was so pleased I felt guilty, as it was genuinely easy. I did a little SITD type quilting to make it look more pieced, but they totally did not care how I had produced it.

Mix of pattern and colour looked great too- no waste, and quick!... All good :-)

One of my first quilts was made from a "cheater " fabric by Thimbleberry. It was a crazy quilt BOM. Making it involved some piecing and machine embroidery over the printed designs. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful quilts I've ever made. After I quilted it, the entire quilt look as if it had been pieced.

I really like panels. There so much fun to do interpretive quilting on.
