you might laugh but I use the zipper plastic bags that sheets come in to store my scraps. I organize them by colors. I put fall colors in one, Christmas in another, Pastels in another ect. I like the king size ones the best they are sort of square and hold their shape and stay open.

I don't cut my fabric until I'm ready to use it. About 90%of my stash is organized by color. The rest is by theme - 30's, Asians, etc.

I sort by colour and shades of a prominant colour. I don't cut until I'm ready to use....

I save all of my scraps and those that others give me. If I
don't want to use them, I send them to a pick up site for Medina Children's Home in Texas. The Home either uses them, sells them, or sends them to El Paso to be made into rags. If the pieces are too small or not suitable content for rags, they are sent to Africa to be ground up and made into thread. This thread thing sounds unbelievable to me, but they have told me three times that they really do ship it to Africa. I give batting scraps to a guild that uses them as stuffing for bears that they make for children in trauma. All fabric must be recycled for worthwhile projects. |
I sort by color and sometimes by type.
ie- flannel, christmas, felt I only recently started this, use ziplock bags, and has made it so much easier to use my scrapes.... |
I didn't know there was a rule. I toss dark bits in one container and light bits in another. When the container get too full I make something with the bits.
|
I sort all my scrpas out into clear plastic shoebox sized tubs. I have the following sizes saved - 2" squares, 1"/2"/3" strips, 4.5" square and 6.5" squares. Only the 2" strips are sorted further into lights and darks. Once the tub appears to be full, I stop making other items and challenge myself to making a scrappy quilt.

There are several methods: color, size, value etc. Choose what works for you.
