I recently made a triple Irish chain for a customer and I cut my strips 2 1/2 inches.

Smaller strips, especially for smaller quilts.
For full size or larger the 3 1/2" may work well too JMHO :D:D:D |
I made the triple irish chain by E.Burns twice and used 2 1/2 inch squres . I like having the blocks fit the top of the bed with a border. The 3 1/2" blocks would have been too big for the top. Here is mine

I'm doing a Triple and i used 2 1/2 inch strips and honestly the ending blocks are huge (14 inch if I remember correctly). I can't imagine it at 3 1/2 inch strips.

I am also taking a class this coming weekend for the irish chain, the instructions I got were for the 2 1/2" strips. In checking, most patterns I've found were for the 2 1/2" but I would think it would be your preferance

I made mine with 2 1/2 inch strips (made 2 of them....just alike...twin size)...I'm still trying to figure out how to upload photos & send them, so sorry I can't include photo (lol)

Hi Bonnie,
Visually I think the 2.5 inch squares will give you the most pop. The attached quilt is one of my UFO's-it only needs binding. It will go to my first grandchild, hence I am calling it my 'bait' quilt!! Take care and enjoy your quilt, Irish Chain is a lot of fun. Bonnie |
I have only seen 2.5" strips or smaller being used, but your quilt, your call.

I used 2 1/2".
