You are right that they are a bit flimsy. I read a tip on this board that I started doing and it helps alot (I'm sorry that I don't remember the author because I would love to give them the credit). Use another ruler (I use my 6 X 12 Omnigrid ruler) and place it very close to the slot you are cutting and push down with your hand on that extra ruler. I've found that doing that really stabilizes the June Taylor ruler and I feel like I am get very accurate cuts without any wobble in the flimsy plastic.

dunster, I too have stayed away from it because the June Tailor rulers use a very flexible plastic that I think would "give" too much as you run your rotary cutter along the lines. I think I can be much more accurate just moving my ruler and know I have a solid ruler edge to run the blade on.

I really wish they would make this in a firm and thick plastic like other Omnigrid or Olfa type rulers. That would be something to really get excited about.

I agree with your concern and have a solution. After I align the June Taylor ruler, I place my 6x12 ruler on top of the June Taylor ruler on the plastic strip where I will cut. I don't try to put it on the cutting slot, but near it to hold it steady. I then cut in the cutting slot. Also, I use my 6x12 ruler upside down so it will slide from one cut to the next.

I hope that makes sense. It really helps get a straight cut.

Oh, I see JudyTheSewer already posted this idea. I think she explained it better.

My DH hand carried two Shape Cuts home from Houston for me as the bigger one wouldn't fit in his suitcase, lol. I ordered them online from Walmart and he collected them (not to mention the stuff I had sent to his hotel!). I don't know how he managed it - I think the cabin crew took pity on him. :D

I have several of the shape cut sizes and haven't had a problem with the cutter blade cutting into the ruler. I don't baby them either. I can't tell you how many times they have been dropped, stepped on, flung like a frisbee, and even sat on in the car seat. My guild has them and they are used by many different people and no one has ruined one yet.

Amazon had the best price when I bought one for a quilting g/f. It is the best thing since sliced bread :)

I do the same as JudytheSewer. The Shape Cut ruler is one of my most used quilting tools.

I use painter's tape, to hold together the slots I'm not using. That keeps the 'open' slots from shifting, as I cut. It also helps prevent cutting, in the wrong slot. The tape can be reused, many times.

After reading this thread I ran down to JoAnns and got one. OMG! I think I'm in love. I'm currently working on a quilt that requires either 62 or 124 squares each of several fabrics. I wish I'd had it last week when I was making the four patch blocks!

Same here. My rulers slip more than the shape cut. I'm getting much more accurate cuts and it's a lot quicker.

Ladies, I am not in love with mine but will certainly try the tip with the ruler on top and maybe it will work better for me. I am not complaining though since it does save alot of time and I picked mine up at a garage sale for $2. I don't think it had ever been used along with the Olfa matt I got with it.
