I would definitely recommend Hayloft. Nice quaility, good display and very reasonable prices.

I was just there yesterday. Wanted to go to Obie's just for the experience but ran out of time. My BFF had to be back for work in the afternoon. It's about 90 min. for me as well but worth the gas $$ for the price difference in fabric. I had just gone to my LQS a couple of days before and paid about $10/yd. for fabric for a small project. Had a larger project to buy for, thus the trip to Lancaster and definitely worth the gas! Fortunately I'm able to go about once every month or 2. Even if I don't have anything specific in mind one of my other quilting buddies does!

It is so crowded you can't walk thru the store. Nothing is really organized either. The ladies there know where everything is..

Does Obie's have a basement?

Oh my gosh- Obies- can anyone purchase anything there?! that's a shame- all I see are potential financial losses from having too much fabric. wow.
what do they do if someone wants a bolt from the bottom of one of those piles? :shock:

I have only been to Obie's once - I just couldn't cope with the cramped quarters. And I wondered the same thing you did - how do you get to any of the bolts that aren't the top two or three in the pile? I think I was afraid I would see one near the bottom that I really wanted but couldn't get to. :lol:

I have been to Obie's twice, and it IS an experience you won't get anywhere else. This year there were at least three "avalanches" of bolts falling over and blocking the aisle. One of them fell on me as I was standing and not touching anything and the bolts just came down on my back. It can be dangerous- my sister kept saying she didn't know how they were allowed to be open at all, fire marshalls must look the other way.
You really have to see it to believe it, the bolts are stacked two and three deep, no way you can possibly see all of them. I bet some have been buried in there for years!

I live not to far, Reading 1/2 hour away, I went there once 16 years ago, when I moved from NYC, I don't like it when I have to dust fabric off to get to the real color. I never went back, up until that point I had never shopped in a barn or shack. still not used to it, I Bitty Kinna's, I met her during the Lancaster Show, she was extremely personable, very nice, gorgeous fabrics, worth the trip.
