I have the Janome 3160 and like it because it's a full-size machine. I just wasn't comfortable with 3/4 size.

It has the higher-end features you want. The only bad thing about it is the lighting. But the classroom where I take my classes has lights on every table so I can position the light to enhance the machine's lighting.

Other than that, I really like it.

I have 2 small machines that I take to classes - Janome 720 and the Janome Gem Gold. I've even taken the Janome 720 on plane trips as a carry on. The Gold has more stitches, that's the only difference between the two.

When you get a light weight machine, I suggest you buy some of that rubberized non skid shelf liner, you can find it in the dollar store. Cut a piece and stick it under the machine, that will stop it from moving around.

The new Janome Gems have a lot of features the older Gems do not have. I have the older one and it has never given me any problems at all. If it does not have a carry handle on the machine do not buy it. You'll wish every time you pick it up it had a handle, unless it's a FeatherWeight of course.

Babylock has a model called a Sophia that has all of this, plus some embroidery capability and an out of thread warning beep. I got mine used and really like it. It's lightweight and powerful for the money
