Yes, I've used embroidery on quilts. The first one was for my doctor and it was my very first quilt. The second one I made last year.

I also have an Auburn quilt in the works for my oldest son. I'm hoping to finish both this year. I just make it up as I go. One day I might get brave enough to follow a pattern. lol |

I have a Melco embroidery machine and I have been quilting my latest quilts with it. Embroidery library has many quilting designs.

Thank you to everyone who posted pictures of their quilts with machine embroidery - I love them!!! You have given me lots and lots of ideas of how to incorporate embroidery into quilts without just putting them block to block. Hope you all don't mind but I saved them all to my personal picture file for inspiration. And for those who might be just getting into machine embroidery, Embroidery Library is a terrific place to find all kinds of designs - and they have sales all the time - great digitizers. (No affiliation - just a happy customer).

Do the embroidary separately and then sew it in. My husband does the digitizing for me.

I love incorporating machine embroidery into my quilts. I am just finishing up a horse themed quilt. It has 17 embroidered horses on it. I did a unicorn quilt for my step daughter a few years back. I have the Singer Futura CE250 and used it for 3 years and recently bought the Futura Quartet because it has a bigger hoop, a 6 x 10. This machine is also set up nicely for quilting with a big wide bed. I have not quilted with it yet but it did come with a walking foot and everything I will need for quilting.

My son, now 11, wanted to design a quilt when he was 7 -- we worked together on it, him picking out designs, approving my digitizing, and showed him how to layout the quilt (was a great math lesson for a 2nd grader!) It took over a year to finish in the spare time of letting the machine run, etc. We went to the store, and HE picked out all the fabrics... the girls just loved it, a little boy painstakingly looking for the "right" print/color. Hey, who says guys can't do this!
We ended up with this... 31 different Pokemon designs, no two alike, and it fits his loft bunk perfectly. I nearly have to fight him to get it for washings. Over 300,000 stitches in the embroidery, most poke's averaged around 10K each. BTW -- he would get home from school and say "Mom, I don't have any homework, can I baste my quilt?!?" -- so I setup my Gracie so he could go to town. So by the time he was 8, he had done nearly 1/2 the work on this quilt. BTW he re-arranged it on the livingrom floor about 12 times before it was "just right" to start assembling the blocks. It was precious, and he has a total understanding of what goes into a quilt! So now he prefers to give handmade gifts, too. half the quilt, he kept knocking out tension on my Gracie frame, so I clipped it on for him to work on basting... i have a question. i noticed some of you quilt very close to the embroidery and others dont. Is there a rule for this. Some emb blocks would not look good with quilting next to it yet it needs to be tacked to the other 2 layers. Does this make sense? Can anyone advise?

May I ask where these designs are from?

Betty I love your stars. Do you have an easy way to do them as mine never turn out?

Another idea to learn to use your embroidery machine is to do a Hoopsisters quilt. I did a mystery quilt this past year and really learned how to embroider with my new Bernina 640. The Hoopsisters have dozens of patterns and tutorials.

The Christmas baby quilt (hope to get a pic) was my first quilt. I put emb. on it that meant something to parents and me (the Grandmother) Used flannel and the emb. went on the solid squares. Baby's birth date, name, fireman(Dad),L'Chiam(DD theater),frogs(live across from pond),snowmen,Irish, etc.,etc. It just grew(like Topsey) and got away from me. There area bazillion 4x4 designs out there that can be sued on squares. Just go on a search and you will find them. Have fun!

Many times I embroider after the quilt is finished- use it as part of the quilting! However, you have to be really careful & stay with the machine, because snags can happen & the a whole section of the quilt has to be fixed. Happened to me once - never again!

Cynthia I also have an embroidery Designer 1 Viking machine.
I love your border embroidery on your mystery quilt. How did you do it. |

I embroider on everything. My primary embroidery machine is a Brother Innovis 4000D. I've found the trick is to be sure the piece you are embroidering on is bigger than you need. The design will "shrink" the material so you want to be sure you have enough excess material to cut your square/rectangle/whatever down to the size you want.
I recommend this site. They have tons of tutorials and a showcase of projects and weekly sales that can't be beat! http://www.emblibrary.com/EL/default.aspx Fleece Rag Quilt Fleece Scarf with Fight for the Cure Theme Quilt Label Mug Sleeve onesie front Table Topper Hobo Purse Back of Fleece Jacket, The embroidery matches the jacket collar and sleeves Burp Cloths |

Polyester can be bleached and that makes it great for dinner napkins. I have read several places that rayon thread is not as durable and does not need to be bleached. I find little difference in the sheen. I have used regular sewing thread as well before I invested in a wide variety of thread colors. It tended to create more lint and the bobbin area required more frequent cleaning ... used the compressed air and it worked great. |

I got a Husqvarna Viking Ruby in October and just finished my first quilt done with quilt block designs hooped on the embroidery arm. I put the top together, pinned it all, began at the middle quilt square and quilted 99 blocks and 26 more border/corner motif designs. Total of 125 individually hooped and quilted designs. Was a lot of fun and turned out well. I used 4 different designs and got them from some HV quilt designs.
I have posted some close ups of the quilting. I didn't stitch around the blocks, as I wanted the back of the quilt to have the pretty designs without "blocks" of stitches around them. The quilt was for a friend getting married...she is from the Texas Hill Country and the quilt fabrics (except for the white-on-white) were from the Moda Hill Country Spring collection. It was great fun and I will do more like this. I did just get a design cd from my HV dealer called "Flower Pot Quilts" that has some lovely flower quilting embroidered designs. I am very new to quilting (this is only my second quilt ever) and can't reaally compete with some of the previous posts' intricacies in design, but it is much fun, anyway. :-) machine quilting one design, back of quilt |

I love your border embroidery on your mystery quilt. How did you do it. This whole process was fun and a great way to learn more about using my embroidery machine. I kept my older Bernina to do my piecing and sewing and use the new one mostly for embroidery. With all my machines including my longarm, my sewing room is pretty crowded. I iron in the hallway. And my q. stash is in every nook and crannie all over the house. I love crafts and am always trying new techniques. Embroidery is just soooo much fun. Cynthia |
.Worked really well when I used old mattress pads for the batting and spray adhesive to temporarily hold in place ... very few pins required.
Patricia - I'm confused - a brand new embroider'er. If I were to make a table runner and used a plain block in the center - could I spray the batting, put the top on the batting, hoop it and embroider in that block? Thanks for any help! I love everyones' work and hope I can come close to something as nice. Pat |

Yes, you can! Enjoy.

Thank you. I enjoy creating and only have a small glimmer at the beginning of a project as to what it will look like when finished. lol

Patricia,
I was perusing your quilts and saw the Alabama one. I love what you did. I have the Official Alabama patches I got at Houston show 2 years ago and some of the other fabrics but have not done it yet. I need to find some houndstooth. Where did you get the hat pattern? Your embroidery is great. Job well done. ROLL TiDE Peg-TX Innova 18" |

ROLL TiDE Peg-TX Innova 18" The hat ... well, I googled "bear bryant fedora" and got a small pic and enlarged it, simplifying the lines into something I thought I could duplicate by applique. I can scan and email to you if you want a copy. Check out rapidresizer.com for enlarging patterns. That's what I used for the large "A" in the center. Free for 14 days. Are you aware that the newer fabric has a different "A" than the one I used? Mine is the older version ... newer one has tip pointing upward. |
these are gorgeous! I have an embroidery machine and just started playing with using more than one color - the thought of multiple colors just scared me - no more! So inspiring, thank you for showing...
