Marshall's
Has anyone used the wide backing from Marshal's Dry Goods. If so how did you like it. Just looked in my local fabric store. It's $22.00 a metre and I'm thinking one is OK the other is a step up from cheesecloth. So for this quilt I've just gone to thrift store & bought a king size 100% cotton sheet for $1.50. Haven't used it yet, just a tad leary of using a sheet for backing, I'll get over it.

I use sheets for backing all the time. It depends on the quilt you are making...how it will be used and washed. Since all my quilts are made to be used and abused I don't really mind using the sheets. If ~ I ever make a quilt more for show..I will be more careful in choosing my backing. But I have quilts both with cotton and sheets around the house and I haven't been able to tell a difference in wear..

I use sheets that I have at home I hate or ones from the thrift shop all the time, all quilts have worked out really well. I know many quilters don't use because the thread count is so much higher, but ones I use are 125-200 thread count and are great and cheaper

There is a variety of backs at http://www.fabricsgalore.com/catalog.php?cid=108
They range between $6.50 and $7.50 and some are name brands. Nice lady to deal with as well. Hope this helps. Carole in BC |

Check out the backing fabric at Thousands of Bolts (thousandsofbolts.com). They have pretty good sales.

I h ave found that used sheets can be worn out, dry rotted, and a mess to work with...as in OFF grain,,,do be careful!

The wide backing from Marshall's is excellent. I have used it on many of my quilts. But I cannot reconcile the wholesale price that my shop just paid with the retail price you are being asked to pay. I have taken into consideration difference between meter and yard, exchange rate and taxes. Is there something I am missing for it to be this expensive?

Thanks
