Ooopps! Double post, sorry.

The Kona cottons would be nice. Connecting Threads has a TON of solids at $6/yd - their fabric is beautifully woven and easy to sew. Moda's line of solids is also a beautiful fabric at about $6/yd. The palest neutrals are "Snow" and "Feather," - cream and silver. Check them out for a nice alternative to muslin.
If you're going to be doing a lot of hand piecing or applique, the premium muslin may make you crazy, trying to get a needle through it. Get a smallish sample first and see how you like it. I'm using premium muslin for some of the blocks in an appliqued top - lots of different W-O-W prints and solid white for the backgrounds. Thank goodness I didn't choose to make the whole top of this premium muslin - it's just as difficult to sew as the heavily painted W-O-W prints. |

The Kona 200 ct. muslin is wonderful! Sews up real nice. Looks better than some w-o-w fabrics I've seen!

My DJ is in browns and muslin. The pieces are so small that I don't think you have anything to worry about. You're not going to wash your quilt every week. You wouldn't do that with any other quilt either.
DJs have been done in all kinds of colors -- from the original colorway to specific colors to scrappy. I say use what you've been given. You could call your quilt The Neighborly Jane or Neighbor Jane. |
I use muslin all the time. I love to make quilts using 30s fabrics and love how the muslin works with them. I make sure I'm buying a good quality muslin either from a quilt shop or Joann's. Never have had a problem. Good luck.
