It was only a $99 machine anyway and after years of sewing children's clothes, crafts, and even my daughter's prom gown, it owed me nothing.
The silver lining? DH told me to buy a new one, and to get a good one this time without plastic gears! Yahoo! So i've been reading all the topics here having to do with which features and machines are most appreciated. Got a lot of good advice from you all and I want to say thanks to all those who share such great stuff!

it will have to be an OLDER machine, without all the bells and whistles..but there are tons of good ones out there..like the Singer 301 long bed!

Go Vintage! Singer 403 with disks will be a good machine with an assortment of stitches. ALL metal!!! Fairly inexpensive and will last the rest of your life.

So sorry about your white machine. That was my first machine back in the 1960's, & I traded it in on a Bernina in 1968. It was a very good machine for me, I just wanted something new. The Singer salesman was so pushy that I looked elsewhere & found the Bernina. That one gave out on
me when I moved 8 years ago. Then 5 years ago I bought a new Bernina, no not a computerized one. That was the only machine I wanted so I waited until I had the funds.

By the way I still have the Singer treddle that I learned on & am wanting to unearth it to use. My dad bought it for mom in 1938. I know she sewed alot on it.

Every gray cloud has a silver lining. You'll miss your old machine, but you'll love your new one.

She'll be waiting on the Rainbow Bridge of Fat Quarters to accompany you to the land of puffy batting where there is always time to quilt, thread never breaks and beautifully mitered binding attaches itself magically when quilting is complete.

Mine died last Thursday as well - right in the middle of getting ready for an exhibition...if I manage to sell anything it will probably go towards the repairs. Not sure where the burning smell came from - the engine or the motherboard...it's now going to the Pfaff Doctor...
