Be sure you have the right plate on the machine...single hole for straight stitch and the needle is in the middle position...or the zigzag plate for different needle positions.

i have a viking also and i've run into this when the needle isn't up in the shaft all the way.

Make sure the needle plate is sitting correctly and that you put a straight needle in with the flat side facing away from you. Make sure you push it up far enough in the slot. Throw any used or bent needles away. All the best.

They may be able to help you over the telephone or let you know if it needs to go to the shop.
I know how frustrating it is when you can't get your machine to work properly.

I love your username; my middle name is Grace and my granddaughter's name is Serenity Grace

I have the H. V. 830 and when I first got it I broke so many needles. I don't know why, but it hasn't been doing it lately. Ask the dealer where you brought it.

It could be that the thread is getting hung up at the spindle and pulling the needle causing the needle to hit the needle plate. This has happened to me. I don't like the sideways thread holders. I usually set my thread on a tread holder to the back of the machine. I purchased it separately from the machine.

I have a Viking and they are touchy..check the way you have the needle in and my problem is..I.. instead of guiding fabric.. have a habit of pulling on it and that will make your needle hit the plate ! What style Viking do you have ??

Check the needle position. Make sure you have the right foot.
Insert the needle correctly (check your owners manual). If all fails to correct the problem, take it in to where you bought it before you damage it any more. They can fix it and you will be on your sewing way before long. Hang in there. We all have these problems sooner or later. Good luck.
