Southwest Designs out of Albuerquerque, NM had some beautiful old cross designs embroiderythat are beautiful.. She has done shows for my guild and I love her work.

They are embroidered but the ones she showed us had been done using the triple stitch on her machine. so that gives you two different ways to make them.

Have seen watercolor quilts made with squares depicting a cross. You might want to Google. Someone had made a cross quilt called "Watercolor Cross" here on this site done with beautiful calico prints.

Thanks for the link. I had actually looked at these last night. Now I just need to figure out what I want to do. I may have to figure out how to put the symbol for her religious order and years of service on it as well.

Patterns and color ideas?
Thanks QB, you are the best.

I don't know that I'd make a cross on a quilt that I intended for a lap quilt. Just does not feel right to me. the "patterns from history" have a lot of good religious blocks. I'd think about a few of them.

What order does she belong to?

I love the blocks from Rosemary Makhan's books called "Biblical Blocks." It would be awesome to do a sampler, but you probably wouldn't have time. You might even find some free on the internet. Try googling "Bible Blocks" or "Biblical Blocks" as suggested above, or "Religious theme quilts, christian theme quilts," etc. You will be surprised how many free patterns are available from various sources on line.

I liked the Bible blocks. The episode of Little House on the Prairie came to mind on this question--the one where the Ingalls girls used Sunday school money to buy spices or something hoping to have enough money to get Rev Alden a new Bible. Instead the spices didn't sell and all they had was the box that the spices came in. Rev Alden congratulated the girls on their gift as he already had a lot of Bibles but nothing to put one in! I assume your relative has plenty of crosses and might enjoy something else? The Bible blocks would be good reminders of the verses from the Bible and the lessons in them. Since those are 12" blocks, pick several that would make up quickly and it wouldn't take but a few to make a lap quilt.

There are a couple of books that feature Bible Blocks. All are pieced and traditional and would make a lap quilt. I am sure you could find them by Googling Bible blocks. Or, last week, there was a picture of a lovely cross that was set into a lovely multicolored batik background. This sounds like a lovely project for someone very special to you.
