I've been using Aurifil for about 5 years and love it. It is a bit more but there is so much tread on a spool. It last forever. I don't have the thread dust I used to have anymore. I've never had a problem with breakage. I use it for both upper and bobbin.

For my quilts I only use cotton threads. Nothing melts when I press my blocks.

Have you tried a different needle size? Sometimes that's all it takes.

I'm using DMC and Gutterman 100% cotton threads and they both work well for me.

For the Aurifil threads that most recommend here, which are the ones I should use for top stitching and which one for machine quilting? Saw a few variety in the website.

I use Superior Threads So Fine for piecing and Mettler Silk Finish with Bottom Line for quilting.

I'd recommend 50 wt. for piecing and 30,40 and higher for quilting. You can also use 50 qt. for quilting. But it gives you a different "look" with heavier thread and excuse to buy more:>
