Have you tried Ott Lights to see better?

i love to hand quilt. i do what is considered lap quilting - that is quilting without a hoop or anything. when i first began quilting i researched and tried all the different methods, bought a frame . . . all that jazz. the lap quilting was the best method for me. you can also use masking tape. most fabric stores and quilt shops sell 1/4" wide and up. works great for my old eyes. good luck. and practice, practice, practice. and remember stitch size does not matter as much as consistency. have fun.

There's a great book on hand quilting by Jinny Byer (sp?) I'm not sure of the full title, but if you type in hand quilting on Amazon this book should come up. I've wanted it for some time. I hope you find the help you're looking for. We are glad to have you here!

I do a lot of hand quilting. Also when quilting stitch a bit from the ditch, using the ditch as a guide for straight rows.

What specifically do you need help with?

My first and second quilts were hand quilted. I stitched in the ditch and that second quilt, particularly, looks really good. The quilt class I take, however, has all machine quilters so they speed right past me. I want to learn that, too. Marking with the tape may work better if your vision is becoming a problem because that would at least give you the FEEL of where you are. Good luck! Watch a lot of handquilting videos on you tube - that helps.

I love to hand quilt, but since you do have eye trouble you could get one of those magnifiers that hang around your neck
that would help you see your stitiches. It is just getting comfortable doing it, but really when you think of it, it is really
just a running stitch. Do you use a thimble? I use the jelly
kind, they are nice and soft, needle does break thru eventually
but I just get a new one, they are cheap. I also when going in
and up position, I use one on my thumb, anything to make it
comfortable for you.
