Welcome from Placerville California and good luck on making your dresden plate placemat like the one in your picture. Ammandasgramma pretty much covered what you need to know. I hope this isn't a Christmas present for this year though because it does take time to get these cut, sewn, and finished up. Have a very Merry Christmas.

Welcome from the Lone Star State. It was 83 here Yesterday. The placemat looks good to me, too.

I believe if you go to the Nancy's Notions web site you will find a link to her videos, from the show. One of these is dedicated to dresden plate projects including a place-mat. It is not too complex if you think of each wedge as a slice of pie. sew the slices together and you get a plate. the center circle on your sample seems to be just appliquéd down with a satin stitch. There are plenty of books out there about just the dresden plate pattern so check with you local library. Research on line until you find a book title that seem to have what you want and if your local library does not have it they can get it from inter library loan. I also believe if you google the dresden plate pattern you will find loads of pattern resources.

You can hand stitch all those pieces on and hide the stitches or do like they did. Finally, sew the backing to another backing (maybe with batting - up to you) with the RIGHT sides together -- be sure to leave a 4" or so opening on one side). Flip the right sides out, close the opening. Now...what I'd do is sew with the machine or by hand an "echo" stitch around the Dresden plate -- so you're sewing all the layers together.....basically, quilting it. Hope this helps!!!!

This is JUST ABOUT what I would do. Only after sewing the blades together, I would do a straight stitch around the opening, a little less than a 1/4" away, to keep it from stretching. Then stitch the backing on right sides together, clip the curved edges and turn right sides out. Press well. The applique the circle on with a satin stitch like they show, and you won't have any opening to hand stitch closed.
