Let's be realistic now. You probably know your family's finances, thus whether he is just being a tightwad or if you really can't afford any machine. At this time of year he may want to surprise you at Christmas (my husband would). Sit down with him and figure out how much and when you can afford a machine. Talk to your local dealer to see if they sell consignment or can get refurbished machines. We all have our own favorites, but ANY mid-quality machine is better than no machine. Good luck.

I would have already done that if I had my own money. I only work very little in my shop because I am so busy with housework, homeschooling our daughter, church work and activities for my daughter (Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, Sunday school, etc.). I can't complain about my elna 6003, aka Eleanor Burns "Quilter's Dream" (which I purchased before I ever started quilting) for piecing.....some day I hope to have a long arm machine for the quilting. I'd like one with a stitch regulator.

My 201 Singer that runs so smooth and handles everything but the zig zag stuff which the 401 Singer does, and a Brother Innovis 1250 that embroiders. Mostly my featherweights are stored because they are in mint condition and one of them was one of the first ones ever made back in 1933.

I have several machines, but use my Bernina 630 most and then come one of my featherweights. These are for piecing and do use the 630 for FMQ of small projects. I bought a Gammill Premier with a Home Pro 12 ft table 3 0r 4 years ago for quilting which I love. It very seldom gives me any trouble and if I'd practice more I could do a better job at free motion, but I so enjoy using it. It's just the time and getting to it.
