i paper pieced for years without a special ruler- but now that i have the 1/4" ruler...i love it & wonder why it took me so long to try it out. it is not a must- but it does make things easier. just one of those things- and i must admit- i had it for probably 6 months (it was a gift) before i finally took it out & tried it...now i use it all the time! thinking about getting the 1/8" one next for the mini paper pieced blocks.

I have had no problems using a regular ruler.

Because I want to keep sewing I use the Add-a-Quarter ruler. I know I can be easily distracted when cutting and after all the work I have already put inot something I don't want to make a really bad error.
Just saying what works for me. ali |
If it is the paperless paper piecing, the add a 1/4 ruler will give you more accurate designs. Especially important if it is a pattern that has several units that you join. The ruler has a little ridge that lets you snuggle it close to the folded paper and cut the exact 1/4 seam allowance. The 1/4 seam allowance is the guide for where you place the next piece of fabric.

I have been paper piecing for years all with just my regular rotary cutting ruler.

not a must you can add a quarter with any ruler

Ditto the others --- easier, but not necessary and I use scissors once in a while, too.

I took a paper piecing class and the add-a-quarter ruler was one of the items we were supposed to bring with us or purchase. I purchased one and it is still sealed in the original packaging, because I found that using the quarter-inch line on my 5 x 24 gave me a lot more control.
