I have a problem with random pieces because I like my work to be pleasing to the eye. Not just to be random for the sake of being random.

I don't agree with the 'yuk' either. And the thing about random is you can't make a pronouncement until you are finished. I sort for value if necessary: light, medium, dark and put them in paper bags or plastic grocery bags. Reach in a grab. I don't have a problem with 'random', the bags just keep them from travelling all over the place.
I think I'd try a small project. If you truly hate it when you're finished, then random is just not for you. A word of caution: a friend of mine from guild did a quilt last year. Supposed to be random but she just couldn't stand not controlling things so it's scrappy but very controlled. It's a nice quilt, but she's disappointed that it doesn't sing the way the one in the pattern did. And the only way to get those amazing surprises is to be random.... Have fun! |
the reason i love scrappy/random is b/c i'm not good at selecting colors. if i have to think it takes all the fun out of the project. i've been in crazy/strip quilt class with those who try to match and they never complete their square in the alloted time. they agonize over matching. my dtr does this. different strokes for different folks.

I just need to have a light value difference. just my quirk.

The first big quilt that I did was a scrappy and my DSL told me it was to be totally random. Sure enough, I found myself picking and choosing so I finally got to the point of closing my eyes, reaching in the bag and what ever I pulled out was the prize for the moment. It worked.

My suggestion is to not look at the blocks individually but to continue making them randomly and THEN when your blocks are sewn together you will have a moment of surprise that it all came together wonderfully.
