Most of my quilt backing is just a big nine patch in the size to fit the quilt. I don't like a solid piece of fabric for backing, not interesting at all.

I think the only reason that you shouldn't run the seam down the middle is that it's where most people would fold the finished quilt and that would weaken the seam

Try John Flynn's method of seaming diagonaly in the back
It works great and saves fabric. With a little additional fabric you can extend 44" fabric out to 60". Instructions are on his web site |

I almost ALWAYS make to make blocks normally I make a couple "practice blocks" and I use the same fabrics as I will use in the quilt. What I do with these blocks is add them to the backing. I put a "border" around them so when I trim the backing and batting I am not cutting into the blocks. It not only gets rid of the blocks that would otherwise be known as orphans but it also means less fabric needed for the backing which saves me money! :)

As someone as mentioned refer to John Flynn's backing instructions. Using diagonal piecing for all or part of the back can save the amount of fabric needed. There is a practice where there is a decorative section across the top of the back of the quilt. This decorative section can be filled with extra or practice blocks. This area could be filled with a piece of every fabric used on the front of the quilt. This area of extra fabric is then available to be used to mend or repair the front of the quilt if needed. Another suggestion would be to include another section across the bottom of the quilt using left over fabrics used on the front. Also be sure to make a large pillowcase in a size that will hold your folded quilt for out of season and regular storage. Good luck with your backing. Pam M |
