Is that teal on some of the duck heads? Might try that.

Well, I will throw my two cents worth in...

The first corner blocks that you displayed I feel are too busy and too light for the quilt. Since the blocks are busy with the duck scenes, I would keep anything else you put with the quilt as a tone on tone that reads as a solid or a solid color. You want to keep the attention on the ducks, not the background. So any light colored blocks will detract from the ducks.

I always think that if you have a busy main pattern (like the duck pictures) then you need to give your eye a rest, which is why I like the rust and black colors.

Of all the colors you did put up, I would pick either the black (as a first choice) or the use the rust. The red was hard to see on my computer and I was unsure if it really went with the quilt. The green and blue blocks just didn't work for me.

There is one other option and that would be to miter the corner stripes and make it like a frame around the whole outside of the quilt. Just keep the cornerstones for the inside of the quilt. You can then use black for the binding and this would make it look like you put the blocks in a picture frame. If you have not mitered a corner before, there are a lot of instructions or tutorials on line to follow. They are actually easier than they look to make and give a nice finished result.

This is what I did, thanks to all the advice on here. I like the way the rust breaks up the black (actually a very dark TOT charcoal grey). I'm going to use a narrow red inner border that matches the red on the ducks and the rust for the outer border -- I have just about run out of this black. I liked the idea of mitering an outer triple border without cornerstones, but unfortunately had already cut the strips into pieces. I'll try that next time. I think the gentleman I'm making this quilt for will be very happy -- he's 87 and unable to hunt and fish any longer, so his daughter wanted to "bring the outdoors to him".
Whew! For a charity quilt I certainly put a lot of thought into this -- I usually can just whip one out, but for some reasons these colours were challenging to me. But everything came out of my stash.

I really like the rust. I think it just ties it all together.

Any of the darker ones. The lighter ones make them pop too much and that’s all you see. The darker ones make your beautiful squares pop.

I like the way it turned out!!! Good for you for pushing through the challenges. The rust works. Doesn't compete with the blocks, and the 87 year old man is going to love it.
