I love batiks, and have lots in my stash, but there is always room for more. My LQS has prices around $9-$10 and a sale going on through the end of May for 20% off. I think I need to go buy some more reading the prices from some of the other areas, wow, especially Canada. I have bought some from Connecting Threads, beautiful colors.

kheliwud 05-14-2011 05:47 AM

We all will be seeing those high prices due to the failure of the world's cotton crops over the last 2 seasons. Not only are yard goes going up, so will clothing, especially t-shirts and blue jeans. I am trying to buy ahead, my LQS is having a sale this week before the higher priced fabrics come in.

Vat 05-14-2011 05:55 AM

Sadly, unless you find it on sale, those prices are about the going rate.

Momo 05-14-2011 05:55 AM

A local (Columbus, Georgia) quilting shop has beautiful materials. You might find something you like there. I love their fabrics.

JulieTN 05-14-2011 06:38 AM

I buy all of my batiks from Mary Jo's Cloth Store (online) in Gastonia NC. Folks this place is more than amazing. Huge beyoond huge. AND Dolly Parton's costomers buy all of the fabrics, trims etc for Dolly and crew there too.

HOffman batiks at $6.49 to $7.49 a yard - first quality ONLY too.

Has anyone else seen Batik's this highly priced?

Yes, some of the batiks at Joanns is $12.99 a yard. I about fainted when I saw that.

bob1414 05-14-2011 06:41 AM

Hi! I'm back from Bali! I just haven't gotten my butt in gear yet - been in Arizona. Mine will most likely will be $7.25/yard this time. Beautiful stuff - email me ([email protected]) if you're not on my "list".

I've seen batiks online for $13/yard - prices are going up just like everything else! Last night at the market, my 5 lb. bag of sugar was only 4 lbs - sure hope a yard of fabric doesn't change to 32"!!!!

passionpiecer 05-14-2011 06:43 AM

try Connectingthreads.com better prices.

clsurz 05-14-2011 06:45 AM

Just because it says "quilt shop quality" it does not necessarily the case. Most times it is but often it isn't.

Prices are going up on all fabrics and now we see $2 to $3 for fat quarters in Batik and that is the lower quality of batik fabric.

I love batiks and for the right ones I will pay $12 a yard if I have to but will think hard on paying more than that unless it's a really nice quality brand name one that I just have to have that design than I would consider paying more.

vickimc 05-14-2011 06:45 AM

same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. but it had turtles on it, so I bit the dust and got it. But didnt get anything else. that day.

kriscraft99 05-14-2011 06:54 AM

Julie - I was thinking of Mary Jo's the other day. I haven't been in over a year - I was wondering what their prices are now with the cotton increase. I should check her website and see...

Cj my son was in Portland Ore for a Christian concert about a month ago, he stopped on his way back home and bought me 2 yards of Batiks. He said they were $10.50 a yard. They had 6 packs of FQ's for $18.95. So that would make them $3.15 per FQ and would be $12.60 a yard that way. These came from one of the biggest quilt shops in Sisters, Ore. I felt the quality was not worth that price, the ones at our Joanns are a better quality and they are $9.99 a yard. I almost wrote them a note to tell them. They included a business card with the fabrics. It was a loving thought on my son's part. He knows I love fabrics and I had mentioned earlier I wanted some batiks to make a new bag out of.

I paid $9.99 per yd in Northwest Arkansas a few years back. The smaller shops can't compete. Connecting Threads on the internet has some gorgeous fabrics for about half that and you can order charm packs, strips, etc. to be sure of colors etc. I will go that route from now on. I love Batiks and am not quite ready to give them up. I will NOT however, spend my last dime on them.

bob1414 05-14-2011 07:15 AM

Sorry I've been "MIA". My new batiks are going to be hard to part with - trying to decide what to keep and what not to keep!!

rjwilder 05-14-2011 07:19 AM

I bought mine online at www.fabricfanatics.com. The store is all batiks, they sell for $8.50 a yard except the 108" wide is 14.50 a yard.

Jennifer22206 05-14-2011 07:19 AM

My one not so LQS in NJ was charging $15.99 a yard last year. Then again, her fabric ranges from 10-14 a yard. and it's not all that great, so I don't go often.

grammysharon 05-14-2011 07:23 AM

In most of the quilt stores on my shop hop (14 stores) they were $10.99.

I buy all my batiks at hancok of paduka on line Their web specials. price is 6.99 to 7.99 a yard and the cuts are generous. They are great to deal with and they beat the local quilt shop price of 10.99 a yard.

jaciqltznok 05-14-2011 07:52 AM

check out stitch-n-frame.net for batiks....GREAT prices in the sale sections!

I can buy wholesale and I can tell you that if you are paying more than $12 per yard for TOP name (Hoffman, Moda, Timeless Treasures(which can be IFFy at best), you are paying too much..if there is NO name on the end of the bolt, you should not pay more than $8 as they are low end goods.

caspharm 05-14-2011 08:04 AM

I seen the same type of prices for the new bolts in the LQS. However, as most of the online shops have been posting an article about how cotton prices have soared due to flooding, etc.

Just shop carefully. Several websites still have older stock with lower prices.

Stitchalong 05-14-2011 08:54 AM

Yes, our local JoAnns have some for $12.99.

IdahoSandy 05-14-2011 08:57 AM

Yes, have seen some at JoAnn's Fabrics.

I have a stash to die for. How did I get it? Over the years
I have bought all kind of kits and fabric on sale. the kits
usually had a pattern I didn't like but the fabrics are of the best quality and lines. I do my own things with these
fabric collections. This includes batiks. I'm so glad I've always done this what with the price of fabric now. I will
just sew to my hearts content now and not have to buy for a
long time.

Flying_V_Goddess 05-14-2011 09:23 AM

The highest I've seen for batiks is $11.99 a yard. But most of the ones I've seen are a few bucks less than that. And these were at quilt shops as I don't shop at Hancock's or other fabric chain stores (for the most part I can't find anything I need to leave with at those stores).

Roberta, I did a wedding quilt for my son and his bride with your batiks and they looooved it!! :D

lllog 05-14-2011 09:41 AM

We sell batiks starting at $7.95 for blenders to $9.95 for designed batiks. We have the largest collection of batiks in the area. My late wife loved them, so we have always tried to get as many as we could.

Real batiks, like everything else are getting more expensive, not only due to cotton going up, but the cost of shipping them here from overseas.

I think that batiks bring something to a quilt that regular fabric can't match.

dsch 05-14-2011 10:14 AM

I must be addicted to batiks since I buy at least 5+ fat quarters whenever I go fabric shopping. I love batiks, especially the precut 2 1/2" strips called Bali Pops. A while back I stumbled upon a website that sells the Bali Pops for $23 each instead of the regular $35 ish price. I ordered several sets of them & even with the minimal shipping, I figure I saved money & didn't have to go anywhere but my computer! The location is in California, if I remember correctly, and the service was outstanding. It is called Beverly's.com and they have LOTS of interesting stuff. But don't tell ANYONE, let it be our little secret! ;-)

kwiltnutt 05-14-2011 10:14 AM

In Canada, we pay anywhere from 16.99 to 22.99 for batiks from a LQS. I have bought some from Connecting Threads but the quality is not as good as LQS.

Yes!!! I am not to hip on Batiks but one of my quilting buddies is... ha
last week we did a bit of a shop hop here in the KC area... we were so shocked to see the prices on the batiks!!! and the fats where [3.00] for one stinkin FQ!! she said she may have to turn her like to something else.... just 3 weeks before, she paid only 30.00 for a Bali Pop.... I hope the prices don't keep going up!!! I might have to just shop the clearance rooms. :-(

grannypat7925 05-14-2011 11:50 AM

Connecting Threads Batiks are $6.96 per yd.

decky 05-14-2011 01:22 PM

I bought some batiks a couple of months ago and they were 9.49 at the LQS. This shop seems to be cheaper with all their material. A mother and daughter run the shop and have no other help, maybe that is why they can charge a little less.

Boslie 05-14-2011 01:43 PM

The batiks at Connecting Threads is very reasonable. Also, fabric is made in the USA> Between $6 and $7 a yard.

joyce888 05-14-2011 01:56 PM

Yes my LQS is selling their batiks for 12.99. But what I think isn't fair is they increased the price on the ones that have been in the shop for quite some time and were 9.99. I have another shop I frequent that sells theirs for 8.99 but they don't carry the 1895 Hoffmans'. I've gotten to mostly buying online when I find a sale.
