I just use a regular metal thimble and was having trouble getting one to fit. I had 2 or 3 different sizes that I was using, sometimes one would fit, sometimes another. It was frustrating! THEN, I read a tip here on the board (what would we do without it?) to lick your finger before putting on the thimble -- and it works! EVERYTIME! :)

I like old silver thimbles. I have several different sizes, in case my fingers swell up. I think I use them on the "wrong" finger, though - for hand sewing, I use the thimble on my ring finger. For hand quilting I use a thimble on my middle finger.

If you have a inexpensive metal thimble, whack the side with a hammer to make it oval shaped. You'll be amazed how much better it fits. Your finger is not round it's oval. It's so much more comfortable and the thimble says on.

My older brother works with deer hides and makes me thimbles that fit so perfectly. He has made me several sizes as my fingers swell from time to time. Sorry, this is not really any help, just a comment!
