When making a rag quilt is it necessary to always use flannel? Can you just use cotton on top and on the bottom and batting inside?

Flannel give a very nice "raggy" look, but anything that ravels will work. I've used upholstery scraps and that was stunning.

Wow, someone else asked the same question just a little bit ago!!

You need to use a fabric that rags well. Flannel and homespun are usually the best. Corduroy also works well.

Thanks for the advice sorry I missed the post from the person earlier asking the same question. :)

I just thought it was kind of eerie that the same question came up twice in a short time span!!!! (cue the theme from "The Twilight Zone"!!!!)

Cottons work really well, I actually prefer working with them :D:D:D

I usually use denim on one side and flannel on the other The last two I made I used mens shirts on one side and denim on the other

I make rag quilts out of fleece, it doesn't rag but it still has an interesting look to it when the seams are cut, and I only use 1 ply of fleece, 2 plies is really heavy.
I didn't put a center piece in the squares in the last flannel rag quilt I did. It was a really big quilt and I thought 3 layers would be way too heavy so only did 2 layers. |
Very successfully made with 100% cotton materials.
