Can't locate the picture I saw on the web, but it was a double Irish chain with embroidered blocks set on point....

Here's a beautiful sampler posted by QB member Julie is NM. I saved this post with the thought that I may use her idea for the blocks I've done: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...r-t150163.html

I have a quilt that I used a Smith Street set of designs --it is a queen size. Each design was made in a large format and then in 4 small blocks. These pictures were taken in very poor light.

Embroidered blocks look really good set on point but you do have to decide before you apply the design.

Here are a few I have done. The orange and yellow one is stacked 4 patch blocks (but you could easily use embroidery here instead) - they are set alternately with quarter square triangles.
The one with the embroidered quilt blocks is the warm wishes pattern.
The anchor one is set on point, alternating with string pieced blocks.
You could also do an Irish Chain and add embroidery to the center blocks.
What about the shadow block?

I really just make something up when I set the embroidery blocks. I love to use them and have made tons of them to gift or for charity. Here are a few that I liked and were very easy.

Red Garnet do the most beautiful work. Any of her designs would be great.

These are all beautiful! I was going to suggest that looking at scrapbook layouts can be helpful for ideas of how/where to place blocks if you are looking for some out of the ordinary ideas.

One of my favorite blocks for showcasing embroidery is the Irish Chain.
