I have been taking care of my foster "son" who also has CP for 20 years. I have never used special fabrics for him. I would just say make it well enough that it can hold up to repeated washing in case of incontinence/accidents. Something heavy enough to keep him warm in the winter or light enough to be covered in warm weather without overheating him. My son does not do well in either extreme. I believe it's kids with Autism that need heavy/tactile fabrics.

First, I am so sorry for your loss. Animals bring us a special kind of comfort. I have a son with CP. He is not particularly sensitive to fabrics, but I do keep them soft cotton and washable. (I agree with another quilter who mentioned autistic kids being very sensitive about textures). As someone else suggested, I would find some fun 'burger and fries' fabrics, as that is what brought you together. Maybe use that as a jumping off point to pick your other colors. I'm sure he will be thrilled that you thought of him in such a loving way.

My daughter, a young adult, has cerebral palsy also. She is unable to walk, but has a full-time job as a college instructor. There are different types of movement disorders under the CP umbrella. My daughter has two types which affect most of her body, but thankfully not her speech and one hand.

By the end of a busy workday, she is ready for a warm soak in the tub and to stretch out on her bed under her quilt and relax her muscles. She gets chilled easier than the rest of us, possibly due to circulation. Textures don't really bother her. She is fiercely independent and doesn't want anyone to treat her like a sick person or to pity her.

She chose her quilt fabrics, happy 30's prints in the brightest colors.

What a sad but sweet story. And what a wonderful gesture on your part.

My condolences. Rescue dogs have so much love to give. Try to remember the fun times.

I worked with several CP students and textures weren't a consideration. I do like the idea of bright colors. the Mickey D fabric would be great if you can find it.

My sister has CP. Everyone has different preferences.

Why don't you ask the young man what type of quilt he would most like? He can guide you on color, fabric texture and maybe even pattern. You could bring a few quilt pictures with you to your next McDonald's meal to give him some ideas.

You will never be able to guess his preferences and he will enjoy the quilt more if it is to his liking.
