I have found that recently I am liking bits of a clear bright orange thrown in, or even red. Neither has ever been high on my list of favorite colors. Now the challenge would be to put one or both of these in a quilt for myself!

I put yellow in everything just about and black too, I think it makes them pop

Funny how quilting along the way makes a person look at color combinations differently.

Yes, indeed. Never liked yellow, because it's difficult for me to see in some situations, but love to use it in a quilt. It does make other fabrics pop.

Red is my favorite color, always has been, but apparently - according to my 29 year old daughter - my real favorite is green. Except it's not. I think it goes back to when she was little - we bought a house with orange carpeting throughout the upstairs and DH didn't want to spend $$$ to replace it and we really didn't have the $$$ to spend on it, either. I was lucky enough to find a set of drapes that had a green background and a delightful pattern that included orange and actually matched the rug. I did love the drapes, but not because green was my favorite color.

I have also started using a lot of blues, which has never been a first choice for me.

Amazingly, one of my favorite color combos is red white and blue but I have only made one quilt top using all three colors. It was king size and I think it R-W-B'd me out. Actually, two, but the second doesn't count. It was one of my Mom's UFOs: I added 3 borders to to make it a usable size - and don't like it at all, can't stand to look at it. But one of her adult grands will love to get it in the future. After I convince myself to quilt it so I can get it out of the house.

I think if we allow ourselves to - our color sense expands and matures as we look at the world through developing "quilting eyes". I definitely balk at currently popular or trendy color combinations unless I really like them. Still haven't felt the urge to do anything scrappy, but who knows?

Seems like when I really think I just don't want to work with a certain color and I get rid of a good share of that color , I have an urge to use that color.. its the same with styles of fabric. Got rid of bunches of late 80's florals .. and with in months I wanted to make a quilt out of all florals.
Go figure!

All of time! In fact I am redoing my queen size quilt back for just this reason. Now the new design is driving me crazy! It looks simpler but it was a lot more work since there are now smaller pieces. But I like it better with different colors and design so it's worth it!

Pretty much all the time! That's what makes it fun!

One famous quilter, who I can't remember right now, said you should try and incorporate a color you dislike in your next quilt. It keeps you fresh and you might turn out liking it!

perhaps this is a good reason not to purchase too far in advance of a project or for the stash! LOL

I'm not good at picking out colors to begin with, so I almost always change my mind after making several blocks. I've ended up with multiple quilts in the same pattern, but with different color schemes because I change my mind and pull some colors out and add others in and end up with enough blocks for multiple quilts of different colors. I end up spending so much on fabric because I do this. It's something I'm really trying to improve upon.
