I'm making my first rag quilt. I've purchased flannel for the back. I read somewhere that the flannel will shrink 3-5%. I've washed all my other fabrics. Should I wash the flannel. I'm not looking for shrinkage so much as I am raveling. Tks

GP. Yes , wash your flannel too. It will shrink. I use to make rag quilts. They are cozy and cute. But they are also too messy.

I just finished a queen rag quilt .... 132 squares. I used 9 inch squares for the top/back and 7 1/2 inch for the batting.
What I did, was cut a bunch of the top squares/batting/back squares ~ then put them together and sew the X (in fact, I did a double X on them) .... and sewed a bunch. Then switched back and forth between the cutting and sewing and I didn't get so tired of doing one thing. I so love this rag quilt!!! I have it on our bed now and it makes me happy every morning when I get up and see all these bright colors ... and the weight is good for summer too!!! Good luck with your quilt and be sure and post a pix when it's done ;) jody |
I have made three rag quilts with recycled denim on the back, flannel on the top.
The jeans took time to cut up, but I have fun with pockets and other features. The flannel I first ripped into long strips, them stacked and cut into squares 4-6 layers at a time. It went quite quickly. I did not use any batting or middle layer, as the quilts were heavy with the denim. I did not X the squares. The best tip I heard was to buy spring loaded scissors for the snipping. I used regular ones for the first quilt and my hands were very sore. |
