I'm the quilter from CA with the Keeshond, and I believe we met at the NH keepsake quilting shop. I couldn't do a 1/8 inch seam, I'm sure.

I saw a beautiful rug knit on size 35 needles that was made of narrow strips of fabric. It was on crazymomquilts.blogspot.com.
You could make a skinny log cabin with them. Use some large and then some small pieces alternating them.
tie up garden plants and cut into crumbs for beds at the animal shelter
I must not have a very good imagination...I just throw them away. I don't know if I'ld have the patience to sew all those tiny pieces together. LOL The quilt in the pic is very nice, though.
Thanks for all the great ideas for using skinny scraps.
doll quilts, art quilts, embellishment. if you don't want them i bet there are others on the qb who would be glad to have them! play with them, you could have lots of fun!
I know it is not artistic, nor a challenge, but . . . . . Put any small scrap into an old pillowcase and sew it closed. Using a long basting stitch to quilt it into sections. Thus creating a sleep mattress for abandoned pets at a local shelter. They don't care if it is pretty or not.
If I'm adding a border to a quilt I almost always begin with a 1" strip to enclose the quilt before adding a larger border.

Thank you |
yes that is what we use to make rag rugs with
I don't either & also throw them away. I will start a collection for those of you who do. I made two quilts (same pattern) using 1" log cabins & swore never again!

grammy Dwynn Love this basket....!!!! Have you made many??? Really cool!
I remember someone on the QB used rolls of adding machine paper to sew scraps on and saved this for using on borders?
Or you can save them and cut them up for making a confetti quilt. Cut them up w/ your rotary cutter into tiny pieces, spread over the quilt, cover w/ netting and fmq over the top. The netting pretty much disappears. Landscapes are neat made this way.
This quilt was made with really skinny strips, she started with 1".

I have been using 1/2 inch strips for trivets for the table by wraping them around 1/2 inch rope and zig zaging it together you' be shocked how much waste you will use . I make some round and some oval. Just google rope baskets and make them flat.
The ideas given are so creative! The photos of the quilt and bowl great! Quilters are so imaginative!
Have you ever seen locker hooking? you use thin strips and they are hooked onto rug canvas. there is a special hook that has a eye at the end. When you have 3 or 4 loops on your hook, you pull a cotton string/yarn thru them to keep the hooks from pulling out.
http://www.bzyqltr.blogspot.com/2007...r-hooking.html There is a short tutorial on my blog from 2007. |

Also a good way for children to learn to sew, my 7 yr old granddaughter likes to sew the square or rectangle for the pillow, her seams are not perfect but then again the animals don't care. It gives her a chance to do real sewing & also learn to help in the community. |
Wow, Holice! You sure got a boatload of ideas! You won't dare throw them away now.
Wow! Such wonderful ideas! I've been saving narrow strips to use to tie things together but have been acquiring more than I can use. Now you've all giving me wonderful ideas for using them. Thank you!

One inch??!! That is WIDE!! I use them down to about 1/2 " for my tiny string quilts. Like in my avatar. We use the one inch strips for Log Cabins.

The answer to your question about rag rugs is "yes", I have been cutting strips 1 1/8 inch wide to crochet into rugs forever. I have a great big size 13 crochet hook, and I "speed piece" (sew w/o breaking thread) the ends together, then cut them apart and roll into a ball like yarn, and crochet in a circle or oval until I have a rug for by my front or back door. I used to have one at my kitchen sink, but the kids thought I needed a prettier one, and bought me a semicircle one. I still have one in front of the fridge to catch the drips and the icecubes...lol. They just go in the wash and lay flat to dry! (and llast forever)

I've gotten some great ideas from this post. I love the one about the pet beds.
Almost finished with a bath rug knitted with 3/8" up to 1". I prefer unwashed fabric so when I am finished, then wash it so it turns into soft tight mat/rug. I just tie them together and knit on. More fun than you'd imagine. I'll get a picture asap.

I have been making string blocks with 2 1/2 inch and 1 inch strips today. I posted a tute yesterday. They are so easy and fun to make.
they are free for postage. I have boxes, plastic bags and plastic tubs of them. Need to get them out of my workroom and into another place.

DO a trade here on the board. Bet someone would trade those for something you need.
Chenille
I bought some pre-packaged strips of fabric that were about 1/2" inch or so. They were marketed as chenille so were not cheap. I gave a bunch to a couple of teenagers who were going to put them on jeans or whatever. I used the green ones for Christmas trees. You have to sew them on fabric then take a wire brush to fluff them out.

I am making a quilt for my DGD that is all graduated strips in a square. Each square has two colors and each color is cut into 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4" and 2" strips. Then you put them together graduating from each side. It is all batiks in purples and blues and is turning out beautiful.

I started making locker hooking rugs...Love it so relaxing and its helping to get rid of my scrap that I know that I will not use on a quilt. it uses 1 1/2 inch strips any kind of fabric...prefect since people give me fabrics all the time...many that are ugly.
I used to do this but caught hell from hubby this spring. Some the longer scraps put out for the birds got caught up in the lawn mower he claims. I find it hard to believe anything that could cut off a digit would be compromised by a strip of fabric. To keep peace in the household, I have refrained.
