Thanks for the info. My son in law is a carpet installer and he never told me about these, wait until I see him next week, boy is he in trouble especially when he knows how much I quilt.

Thanks for the info. You ladies are fantastic to come up with new ideas. I was fixing to buy more blades but now I will be buying these. Hugs Brenda

Glad I was able to help. Nothing like a good bargain these days. I also use a Drywall square when cutting, it hooks on the edge of my cutting table and I get a nice straight cut every time.

hagatha1958 08-11-2010 04:14 PM

if you have other ideas Im all ears. I cannot afford all the nice tools and rulers so Im always looking for ways to cut corners. Thanks again Brenda

They fit 45mm rotary cutters, I have a Fiskar's cutter.

I have enough blades to last me a year now.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THE INFO

Yes, they'll fit the 45mm Olfa!! I just checked mine. It has a round peg for the blade to set on so that's all the blade needs is a round hole. I'm going to my Harbor Freight tomorrow to see if they have any of the blades available since they're on backorder on the website. I'll probably go to the next town too to buy some there if they have them, lol!! I'm stocking up if I can!!

Thanks! :-D I'll see if we have a local store.

magpiefeather 08-11-2010 04:43 PM

They must be fairly new...I've been ebaying and checking out carpet stores but to no avail. I have learned a little about tools though and various saw blades, and other carpet cutting tools! haha...I did see an interesting electric fabric cutter...very pricey.

Chasing Hawk 08-11-2010 04:46 PM

Magpie,

I love the quilt in your avatar. I especially love the colors chosen, the four direction, how appropriate for a Lakota Star Quilt. I am 1/4 Lakota and 1/2 Saginaw Chippewa.

Quilting Nana 08-11-2010 04:48 PM

I just called HF and they only have two packages left!
I put them on hold and will get them tomorrow.
4 blades will hold me for awhile. At least until they get another order.

2 to a package and only $1.45 WOOHOO. I bought 10 packages before they discover quilters are using them and raise the price. They are super sharp. think they are made sharper as carpet is tough. Cut like going through butter.

Girl in store said they will have to limit how many a person can buy at a time. They are dangerous. I looked at her and "I am 61 years old I know how to use a blade and one will cut someone just as well at 20."

Always trying to take our bonuses away lol.

Went to Harbor Freight this morning and bought blades they had a lot of them, I even bought the cutter and got two more blades woowoo

what does the cutter look like

Thanks for letting us know they fit our ordinary rotary cutters. I like to change my blade often. Daily would be nice. Cheaper than arthritis meds for my elbow!

This is the first I've heard of these - but sounds great. What size cutter do they fit? 28, 45, 60?

I knew they could make those blades cheaper. I've used X'acto blades for 25+ years and they're not that pricey. It really surprised me about rotary cutter blades.

JoanneS 08-11-2010 05:49 PM

I just placed an order for 20 blades after reading all these coments. With shipping, it's still only $2 per blade. I'm really tired of using blades longer than I should!!!!! because i think they're sooooooooooo expensive. It's a STUPID way to try to save money, because dull blades just make my blood pressure go up, and my accuracy go down!

I wonder how their carpet cutting tool would work on fabric? It looks a bit bulky - BUT it's only $3.99, so I wonder if it's worth trying. I'll take a look when I get to Tucson for the winter. There's a Harbor store there.

CAKELSEY 08-11-2010 06:00 PM

I had my husband go by Harbor Freight yesterday and get me a magnetic parts bowl for pins. Looks like now he gets to go back tomorrow for the blades. Do look for the ads in the Sunday paper and different places,AARP mag, etc. There is always the 20% off coupon but also for months now there is also a coupon for a little free LED flashlight, no purchase required. We get 2 every time we go in. I probably have close to 30. They are really good little flashlights.

I was wondering about that. Thank you very much, and while I am at it - - thank you for the quilter who posted the link - - I was finding NOTHING by searching by myself. LOVE this community! Now! I am going to add sprinkler hoses that I am going back to shop for something else. <wave> Thank you for the tips and added help.

JoanneS 08-11-2010 06:17 PM

HF confirmed my order, and so far they haven't told me it's on BACK order. That'll probably happen tomorrow!

JudyMN 08-11-2010 06:18 PM

Where can I get these blades? Mine is about 6 months old because blades at JoAnn's are sooooo expensive even with 40% off. Do all carpet places have them or only arbor Freight? Where is arbor Freight?

omak 08-11-2010 06:20 PM

It is Harbor Freight and on the first page, if you keep reading down, you will find that these fit the 45mm cutters and a link to Harbor Freight. <wave>

magpiefeather 08-11-2010 06:29 PM

I think it is just a harbor freight item...I searched all over to find them at other carpet supply places but didn't see any.
Also peeps...they have tons of coupons for the free flashlites on ebay! search under "Harbor Freight". Might as well save a little money since we'll all be shopping there from now on LOL! also they are selling tons of other coupons if you plan to buy something bigger like a set of tools or something manly like that....

Oh thanks! I'm Blackfeet and Cree...I noticed your nice eagle on the aprons you did...might have to order some patches or something sometime. Was your embroidery machine hard to learn?
Also....did you look at all my lone stars on my webshots? Beadwork and stuff there too.

CraftsByRobin 08-11-2010 06:38 PM

I have a couple of those here in my town!!!

AVQuilter 08-11-2010 06:59 PM

Rats...my HF is out of blades...guess the word is out here in Appley Valley, CA. already. None expected until next Thursday.
I will be calling to check.

Thanks for this information...

When I describe my rotary cutter to anyone (non-quilter) I tell them that it's a rolling scalpel. : = )

Yes I did, what beautiful work. The machine was easy to learn, I love it. I hope to make a Lakota star quilt one day. Even a small one :)

It is good to see I am not the only one who can cut herself with the rotary blades. I am extra careful these days and put it well out of my way if it is open. No more blood on good fabric for me, thank you.

Great idea ladies, please keep the good ideas and links coming. With 4 grands learning to sew along with DD and a friend besides, I have been spending a fortune for blades this summer.

Nancy11442 08-12-2010 12:35 AM

Linda...I'm from MI too. What is this about and where do I get them? I understand that it's some kind of blade used for carpet cutting but where and just fill me in, please!! I put off buying rotary blades reallly too long and that's dangerous too. Thanks for the input and any help you can give me.

Gerbie 08-12-2010 01:12 AM

What are the sizes and do they fit your rotary cutters? Found out in the thread sizes they fit. Hubby goes there all the time and if he can't and I am in town I go there for him. Will have to get some. Thanks for the post. We live 85 miles from the nearest Harbor Freight, so maybe no one around here knows about it yet. lol Have a friend going tomorrow so will have her stop and get me some. I think I will try the carpet cutter, since it is so cheap and see how it works.

I just phoned the store on Cincinnati West side and they have them in stock. She even quoted me the price to let me know they were a good deal.

June in Cincinnati

DebraB 08-12-2010 06:17 AM

You will be lucky to find any blades left on the shelves. Most stores are sold out and on line is back ordered. Reminds me of my husband's reloading stuff. After the last election tons of folks bought up all the reloading stuff that was available and now he has a heck of a time getting any at all. Seems like it would be better for the whole quilting world if we moderated our purchases.

I looked at the carpet cutter also, but I don't think it will work on fabric, since it is having to lift the carpet off the surface to cut through all the matting and fibers ... not too accurate for fabric strips, etc. (in my humble opinion) <wave>

Gerbie 08-12-2010 06:39 AM

Thanks for the info on the carpet cutter.

This may be late in the game, but are you aware of the fact that Harbor Freight is flooding the market with 20% off coupons on a single purchase. They also have a free flashlight with any purchase. A good way to get a better deal.
