I agree with Sadiemae...I prefer the 8 1/2 x 24 particularly when cutting borders. Alot of times you want/need a 6 in. finished piece which is 6 1/2 in. cut. But I would also recommend a smaller 6 in. x 10 in. for those smaller cutting requirements. But make sure both are of the same manufacturer and both contain at least 45 and 60 degree markings. Those will keep you going for ages.

After the 6 by 24, I use my little 6 1/2 and 12 1/2 square rulers a lot.

To Summer Spice --Love your avatar!! I have the girl pattern, but what is the background? What about little squares size?

I have several rulers bought over the years. The one that I use the most (all the time, actually) is the 6 1/2 x 12. I have almost worn the markings off, and will be so upset when it can't be used anymore. I needed a 12 1/2 x 12 1/12 ruler to square up blocks for a class I was taking. I got a set of 4 at JoAnn's with a coupon for about $17.00. Thought I got a good deal!!!
