I definitely use the 6x24 the most because I usually cut strips. Rather than folding the center fold back up to the selvage to cut 4 layers, I fold end to end of the fabric piece. I am still cutting 4 layers at a time, but it is easier to line up the folds and the ruler to get straight strips. And it is actually cutting 2 strips at a time.
After 30 years of quilting I finally got a 12x12. It does make squaring up easier. |
I have a ruler that I brought in 1999. It is a 6 1/2 by 24 and I love it. The numbers and lines are starting to disappear but I plan on using it as long as I can. I have a smaller one but only use it for trimming. I also have a 8 1/2 by 24 and then there is the tons of other rulers that I had to buy for special quilting classes. Too many!
The ruler I reach for more than any others is 6.5x12". Second is my shape cutter.
Ive collected many rulers but only use a few.
The basic 6 x 12 and 24. 12 and 16 square up rulers. triangle square up by Quilt In A Day and all the flying geese rulers. Several square rulers and fussy cuts. I have the shape cut but dont use it because Im afraid of folding messes. Lots of specialty rulers that I have used once. |
I use my 3.5 x 24 and my 6 inch square most of the time.
6.5,812x12for squarin and 4.5 x24
I use my 6 X 24 Omnigrid for cutting strips and my 6 X 12 Omnigrid for crosscutting the most.
My 6 1/2 X 13 is the one I use the most.
Also my 3 1/2 X 9 1/2 is the one I use the most next to my machine. If I am cutting out a quilt I use my Quilt Cut |
I use a 18 x 24 mat so I need the 24 x 6 ruler. I only cut through two layers at a time on the first cut because doubling it again sometimes produces wonky cuts. I will stack 6 to 8 layers of strips to cut into squares. I used to cut squares to sell on ebay and I could probably cut faster with these tools than someone with an Accucut. And no waste!
My favorite is my 5x24 Olfa lipped thingy (heavy, lipped, and long), and then 2 1/2 inch binding buddy -- depends on what blocks I am making
Omnigrid 4 x 14 after I have cut the strips with the 6.5 x 24.
Like most everyone else, I use 2 rulers the most..... 4 x 24 and 12 1/2 x 12 1/2. The others get used once in awhile.
I use the 6x24 about 90% of the time.
After that, I use the 8½" square up, the triangle trimmer, the flying geese rulers, and other various sizes of the square up. |

My indispensable rulers are my 3.5x18, shape cut, and 6.5x6.5. To me 6x24 just seems awkward. I have a 24x36 mat, but prefer to fold my fabric one more time and use the smaller rulers. Is anyone else like me?

The ruler I use most is 6 1/2 X 12 1/2.
I use my 5X24 with a lip most. At least I thought it was 5". After reading a bunch of these threads, I'm wondering if it is 6". I hope not, because if it is I cut a gazillion squares out wrong yesterday. Okay--out to the studio to look.
I use my Guidelines 6 x 12 ruler the most, since it is the most versatile, and my 6" square ruler.
Shape cutter and 12X12.
I have 2 shape n cuts and believe it or not my 1x6. Love my little one.
Probably the 6 x 24 and then the 4 (4 1/2?) x 12, then the 6 1/2 square.
6.5x24 it's always my first cut
6.5 x 12.5 and 12 in. square. I have the 6 x 24 but don't use it as often.
I would be lost without my shape cut 1/2" grid ruler for cutting strips and squares.
iT'S A TOSS-UP BETWEEN THE 6x12 and my Shapecut.
6 1/2 X 24 and 4 1/2 X 14 on my 30 X 36 mat
6 x 24.
My absolute favorite is my 4 x 14 yes, odd numbers. When I broke my first one I immediately bought a new one.
I use 6 x 24 or 8.5 x 24 for squaring off quilts ( in conjuntion with a large square ruler), and for cutting borders. I use all size squares to square off blocks, I like to use the one closest in size to my block size. |
The one I can find at the moment
Wish I had a 8"x 8" ruler...I need one now to square up my 8" blocks...looked at Hancocks, didn't have one...need to look on line.. I love my 6 X 24...the best..
6.5 x 12 and 12.5 square
I use my 6X24 the most, then my 5X5 & 2 1/2 X 18
Shape cut but if I had to have one ruler it would be the 24x6 because I can do everything with it. I use the 24x6 a good amount.
I am missing out here. I don't even know what a "shape cut" is and a lot of you like it most. I started out using a 12.5" x 4.5" and it still is my most used ruler, followed by my 12.5" x 12.5", and the least used is my 6" x 24", though I do use it too.
edit: googled it and now I know what I've been missing: http://www.junetailor.com/shapecutvideo.htm I'll be adding that to my wishlist :) |
For me it's my 6 X 24, 2 1/2 X 18 and my 5 X 5.
My 6x24 @ my shape cut
I only owned a 6x24 until a few days ago. I was working on miniatures, and ran into a problem, contacted Rhonda and she sent me a special order template and included one that she made that is 2x9. You can't imagine how much easier it is to use on miniatures! If you are interested in templates for miniatures, here is the link:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144668-1.htm In the future I am going to collect more rulers of varying sizes as I need them. The 6x24 was great to start with, but I can see how a square or some of these other specialty sizes can be very helpful! |
I use the 6 X 24 inch ruler every time I cut strips of fabric for a quilt top. I also use the 12 1/2 X 12 1/2 square up ruler to square up my blocks before sewing my rows together,
couldn't sew without them. Also have a 6 X 6 I use to trim and square up smaller pieces as I piece a block and a 6 X 12 for when I sub cut pieces from strips. |
I use my 6.5x 13 and 31/2 x9 I think I have any kind you can think of bu I use those 2 the most
