I have a couple of different rulers I bought for a class and never used again.
|
I have a box full of rulers and only use a couple all the time. My favorite has the black paint markings almost worn off the bottom, it is 8" x 24", and the other is 6 1/2" x 24".

I bought the Eleanor Burns flying geese rulers about a year ago or so. Although i've only used them a few times, I have to say I really like them. I've seen other ways of making the geese, but this way works for me just fine. I'm sure you will like them as I do. If not, they weren't that much and you can try another method and see if that works better for you.

Well, it looks good but recently I got it out and laid it out on my table to measure it again. I was going to get the backing ready for this quilt and get it all laid out with the backing, batting and quilt top and get it pinned so I could quilt it....NOT. It will not lay flat! There is no way i think it can be quilted! I measured here and there to see why it is laying so wonky. My flying geese have it so out of wack that it won't lay flat. It is off almost two inches in one area. Well also the middle of the quilt is a piece of what we call cheater cloth. Looks quilted but not.....I thought it would be good practice for freemotion quilting on this. It was off a little on being entirely square when I cut it out. I cut it along the design on the fabric but it was off...and the fabric was not cheap but the design was sure off. So guess it will now be a table cloth...lol I was disapointed as this quilt was going to be my project for practicing free motion quilting before I worked on a quilt top that was more special. Anyway, I bought the Flying geese rulers by Eleanor Burns to help me learn to make "good geese"...lol

LOL So glad to see I am not the only spendthrift! I spent $99 plus tax on guidelines 4 quilting rulers, sounded good, but still haven't figured out how to convert patterns to make them work! sheesh

Yes, I eventually used the dresden Plate ruler, the triangle ones I find hard to read, stilll have them, maybe I will use them someday.
|
I don't like the cloudy ones.
|
I have a lot of rulers and even stepped on a few and broke them when I didn't realize they had fallen to the floor. I think that most of us will use all of our rulers one day or another.

I don't have to many, but I do use all I have. God bless. Penny

I meant to pay more attention, but I just packed up my room for moving. I bought one in CA on a trip at Bear's Quilt Shop, a Less-than-traditional quilt for doing wedding rings I think it was. Well the thing broke as I was entering my hotel room. Kept it but never used it yet. $17.00 for that.

Ditto to the ditto. I prefer making flying geese the old way. |
There is a trick to using the long rulers. Keep your little finger on the fabric close to the ruler and never run your rotary past the top of your hand. When your rotary gets to the top, move your thumb up, then walk your hand up the ruler using your thumb as an anchor. When I cut drapery fabric (27" folded) or sports weight (30" folded)I want the longest ruler available.

Now that I hearing you all talking about triangle rulers I think I may be sorry I just purchased the Fon and Porter one.
I also got hooked on a neat ruler at quilt show in the spring but have yet to even take it out of the plastic. They make it look so easy to use. Nettie |
Wow, you can tell its been a long day at work today. My english is atrocious. Sorry about that.

Someone once gave me a 24 x 1 1/2 inch ruler. I haven't found a use for it yet, but, hi, I've only had it for about 5 years - surely something will come up that I will need it.
That would be something I would cut my fingers on as there's no surface large enough to safely cut anything. OUCH!!! |

I have what sounds like the same tool and love to use it. <G> Check out the "Piping Hot Binding" and "Piping Hot Curves" by Susan Cleveland. Wonderful effects you can easily get with that tool and the tiny piping cord. <G>
Great way to add just a hint of color in seams or between borders or at the binding. Pati, in Phx |
What brand of 60 degree ruler do you have & like?
I need to buy one for making the OBW quilt.

I think the only ones I don't use are those triangle ones.
I have the set of Darlene Zimmerman's Tri-Rec rulers and have never used them. They are sort of odd-sized & are for certain blocks. I also have a hexagon ruler that I never used because I found out how to strip piece them instead using a 60 degree line or ruler. I started to buy the June Taylor Shape Cut ruler the other day but I just don't know if I like it. I'm afraid I'll end up with the dreaded "V" if I fold my fabric into thirds or quarter WOF to make it fit under it. I have enough trouble avoiding it by folding in half. Do they make a 24" version? |

What kind of rulers do you recommend? I gotta start getting some. Beginner in quilting here.

The Olipfa Lip Edge Ruler is a piece of garbage. It's not square & the company DOESN'T stand by their product.

I've got a Fiskars ruler with a built-in cutting wheel that slides the length of the ruler. The whole thing is about 24" long. I've attached a picture below.
Not long after I bought it, the ends came off that hold the cutting wheel assembly on the ruler, and got lost over time. It's pretty useless without those end pieces, because the cutting wheel assembly just falls off the end. And the measurements on the ruler aren't reversible. If you try to use it with a handheld rotary cutter on the opposite side of the ruler (across from where the black "track" is), you'll get all mixed up. Even before the end pieces came off, it was very persnickety about completely cutting a strip of fabric. It would leave uncut places along the strip, even with a new cutting wheel. Ugh. I'd have to stand up and lean really hard on it to get it to cut, which was hard on my shoulders and my bad knee. Even DH, who's a lot stronger than me, had trouble getting decent strips. I did like the fact that the blade automatically retracts when you're not using it, but that was about the only good feature. Other people seem to like it, but for me, it sure wasn't worth the $30 I paid for it (and I've seen it priced much higher). :( .... On the good side, I love love love my 6-1/2" square and my 12-1/2" square. I wouldn't trade them for (almost) anything! My poor 6-1/2" square has been used so much that the markings have somewhat worn away. |
I use and LOVE all my rulers and templates... some you just need to know how to use.
|
No one here has ever had a problem and she will exchange any that are not right, very far and few between.
My friend had one called and she just sent a new one out.... |

Corry- you can still practice your FM on it, so it's not a total waste of money.
|
Interesting...
I don't like the ones with the lip either. I think I gave mine away. I am curious as to which triangle rulers some of you are talking about. Do you know the brand of the ones that you don't like? |
BKrenning- I saw on a video recently that they have a 18x12" June Taylor shape cut, which I would love, but haven't found it in any fabric or quilt stores, which I guess is good because I really can't justify the expense. But I absolutely love my shape cut.
|
Fons and Porters flying geese ruler and triangle trimmers. Both a waste of money.
I love El Burns flying geese rulers the best. |

If you use the Starmaker 8 for your flying geese, you can make any size without wasting fabric. Try them, you'll like the 3 Starmakers. Kaye Wood www.kayewood.com

I use my 8 1/2 x24 quite a bit and I use a gripper handle. I have those Zimmerman rulers that has never touched a piece of material, nor the dresden. June Taylor's shape I do use and like it.
