I just bought myself one for Christmas. Don't know how to use it, in fact going to take a class next week so it won't be so intimidating. I bought it on sale at LQS. I hope to use it in finishing seams on bags. After reading all the pros and cons on the forum that it my not be useful in the quilting world, I still thought it may be helpful to make the bags and other small items. I guess I will see....

I made a flannel quilt top and I have made denim quilt tops on mine.

my friend uses only a serger for everything. i tried it once for a quilt and found the seams lumpy and uneven. i went back to a sewing machine. plus, i iron all my seams open for a flatter seam with much less bulk all around. you can't do that with a serger.

if you can only have 1 machine, or if you plan to only use it for quilting, then get a good quality sewing machine. it does not have to be the most expensive at all. just one that YOU like that stitches straight and even with good tension. check consumer's reports and all the other mags and try them all out, but don't ask anyone else what they like. everyone has her/his own opinion.

I have a Brother 4 thread and I love it. I ran a commercial serger for years and I like this one for sewing and especially serging around the quilt before I put the binding on. I did use it for making one quilt top but I gave it away before it was quilted.

I have had mine several years and I love it.

I would never use a serger for regular quilting, but I do like it for denim and flannel if it is just a plain easy pattern with squares or rectangles only.
