Wow, what a great idea! I am constantly organizing, rearranging, etc my sewing room and never seem to get it right. This type thread would be a great help.

I have turned my small guest room into a stash room, while still being able to use it as a guest room (well, sort of, anyway). Here are some of the things I did.
- Desk for sewing machine, use drawers for small supplies (rotary blades, zippers, etc.) Big projects must be sewn on the dining table.
- 2-drawer file cabinet for medium supplies (elastic, ribbons, purse hardware.
- 3-drawer plastic cabinet (picked up for free) to store projects ready to start.
- replaced double bed with bunkbed. Bunkbed is 3 layers of storage - top for bulky but light items, lower (double!) for fabric & yarn in plastic tubs, underneath for general storage. Pattern rack hangs from the side rail of the upper bunk.
- Projects in progress in boxes under the window, covered with thick piece of fabric to avoid fading.
- Cheap felt with velcro to hang over bath curtain rod for design wall.
- cutting table in main bedroom - and I'm still not sure why DH let me get away with that!
- and DH put cubes in the closet, for my Christmas present a few years ago.
- plastic bags or containers, for keeping patterns with fabric, stored on the floor in boxes.
- narrow habitrail so I can get to things (habitrail rearranges to get to the corners ;-)

And now I can try some of the other ideas in this thread...

I went to JoAnns and got a load of their cardboard things they wrap fabric on. I cut each one 23" to fit the height of my shelf and wrap fabric on each one. You can get more boards on the shelf than if you use the cardboard things as is. I had read an idea somewhere else that said use foam board, but the foam board is $2.89 each (and you get 7 pieces from each one) and the cardboards are free. So far, they seem to be holding up.

If you have a dollar tree you can get the foam board there for $1, that is what i used, worked great!

Habitat for humanity has stores where they sell things that are donated, that can not be used for new construction. They call them Restores. I went to the local one, and got a set of upper cabinets (with corner unit) that my neighbor was kind enough to mount on the wall of my sewing room for me. I spent $40 and a home cooked meal for a bachelor. Look in the telephone book under Restore. I spent a little money, and helped someone get a home. Win/win!

Now I am watching for drawer units!

Here's something I recently saw in a magazine. Go to a commercial restaurant supply store and buy a bun rack. This is similar to the racks at Ikea where people put their trays when finished eating. Each tray can store a separate project.

Now, if I only had the $$$ and the space for a bun rack!

Oh, that sounds really neat. they have rollers and the shelves would not be too deep, just right. now I am on the hunt. used ones ?? thanks.
